@andyprice I'm not sure that *needs* to be true for IRCv3 though. I could self-host one, and also have similar deployment/moderation tools. It doesn't need to be federated.

@larsmb @andyprice it meets plenty of use-cases. if you want *non-technical* people to use it, it isn't there yet.
Discord got people used to the idea that they can move from community to community without having to re-register.
*that* is why the federation aspect is needed.
