My first impressions of Immich are very positive. If you're comfortable with self hosting and you have the hardware to run it,I recommend trying it out. I'm almost done loading 400GB of my photos into it and it's very snappy.

My biggest compliment is that they looked at Google Photos and pressed copy -> paste which is actually great. So many open source projects suffer from terrible UI/UX.

Two big caveats:
- I've only used it for a few days
- backup + uptime becomes your problem if you switch

The main questions I'm left with:
- Should I switch, or run this in parallel for a while?
- Do I expose this to the Internet, or do I leave it on my home network only (with the ability to VPN in). The app seems completely fine with talking to a local IP.
- Can I live without the fancy editing features Google Photos does?

@rustyshelf I'm still in the trying it out phase. I'm running it and Google Photos in parallel. The true test for me will be sharing. Others will still share via Google Photos so I'll need to figure out how to import those.

I've left mine exposed for now in case I want to publicly share an album.

@jfam yeah I suspect if I switch to it full time it would only really make sense to expose it, since I'd want to use sharing + access things without needing to VPN
