This is pretty much the only thing I ever say to Siri for home-automation purposes, and I say it exactly like this, word for word. Today, Siri decided to get creative and try something different.
@siracusa A while ago I had to rename all my smart lights to 'lamps' because if I told Siri to say turn on the 'bedside light' it'll try to turn on every light in my house. When I renamed it to 'bedside lamp' and called it that in my command, it worked correctly. Seemed like any with request containing 'light' or 'lights' it default to controlling every light.
@BasementDweller3000 @siracusa I’ve used “shuffle playlist playlist_name“ for years to perform the obvious task, but for the past few months I have to do something awkward like “play playlist playlist_name on shuffle“ or else it decides that what I want is music LIKE that playlist but definitely not that playlist itself.
@BasementDweller3000 @siracusa yet here I am with “hall lights” and “landing lights” working fine! One of Siri’s major failings is the ridiculous inconsistency. Sigh.
@BasementDweller3000 @siracusa google home pulls this, too.  if you have something it recognizes as a light set up in the same 'room' as the speaker you're talking to, 'turn on the light' will turn that one light on.

if you mistakenly say 'turn on the lights' or if you say 'turn on the light' to a speaker in a room _without_ a light, they all go on.  including the ones on the outdoor cameras.

I don't like most smart switches, smart bells, etc. I think Siri is designed with strong (privacy) protections, but many aren't safe.

Or even better a good open source alternative for smart switches and smart bells etc!

@BasementDweller3000 @siracusa I had to name my bedside light just “bedside” so I didn’t have to talk to Siri about my “bedside light light.”
(This was several years ago…I hope it’s improved since then!)
@BasementDweller3000 @siracusa are you sure there are four lights and not five lights?
