and then

this game just blew my mind AGAIN. must be the fourth time now. utter genius

I just... wow

earlier I said that I was disappointed that Takumi doesn't appear to remember anything other than the initial timeline when playing different routes. I can see why they did this as it would increase the amount of dialog exponentially if they had to take into account what other routes you had already completed

buut, they were obviously aware of this, (kinda) explained it in-game, and then with the story locks they can guarantee that you know certain events from other timelines before progressing

this game is crazy. I've seen 10/100 endings so far and I just have more questions each time

finished chapter 13 the "Romance Route" which was very silly, you get to spend 25 days each with Kurara, Kyoshika, and Tsubasa while Moko officiates on the "game"

there were some really sweet, funny moments in this one, I don't think there are any bad characters in this game and the writing is excellent

so that's two complete routes finished to day 100 now, and one stuck at a story lock 🤔

ominous music plays

#TheHundredLine

yes Kurara, good point

#TheHundredLine

I adore the character art and dialog in this game, lmao
Darumi nooo 😭

this route is grim af, everyone slowly being picked off by an unknown murderer with a power saw one by one

and Takumi is having periods of memory loss... it can't be, can it?

Hiruko knows something, I'm sure

HOLY FUCK this game continues to amaze with its storytelling. my brain is twisted in knots and broken, just like poor Takumi here

just finished the "Slasher Route" with ending 72 and I'm still trying to process what I just learnt and how it fits in with the rest of the game. so does this mean in literally every other timeline that Takumi is infected with an alien brain parasite that could take over his body at any moment? I'm pretty sure I remember him having blackouts in other routes I've seen

this changes everything I thought I knew about what is going on, and probably explains why Hiruko can remember events from other timelines, but not Takumi

I'm starting to suspect that by the time I've seen every ending and finally understand wtf is going on in the story, that this might just be my favorite game of all time. I definitely can't remember another game twisting my brain in knots as regularly as this one has. and I'm still only at 18/100 endings, too

#TheHundredLine

heh, reading this toot back this morning, I realise that I do tend to get caught up in the moment and declare that my new favourite thing to be the best thing ever, but in this case I'm not exaggerating. we'll see how I feel when I finish the whole game, but atm it's up there with Persona 3 Reload for me

I can't stop thinking about it

omg zombies!

Takemaru is very observant 😅

I think that these zombies have been reanimated by the G'ie parasites that Gaku and Darumi brought back to the school after the battle at the enemy base, they have been acting suspiciously ever since then
YES
Rui Komatsuzaki's character art in this game is unbelievable. I need an art book for this game so bad
No, I don't think she is still alive, Takumi. use your eyes 😅
see, definitely not alive

well, at least I know now how Takumi became infected by the G'ie parasite 🤢😨 (it crawls into his mouth, urk)

have seen 22/100 endings now!

this was one of the endings from what I'm calling the "Zombie Route" for obvious reasons. it's actually part of the Slasher Route but diverges when you manage to kill Yugamu as he's pretending to be the killer for kicks

Kyoshika is the only survivor on the escape pod. Takumi stays behind fighting zombies to give her time to escape, and then he's captured by the zombies and taken to be infected by the parasite queen

this game can be grim af

so I've now seen 2 of the 4 endings required to get past the story lock I hit just after Hiruko tells you that you're both stuck in a time loop

my favorite ending of the game so far, unable to bring himself to kill Zombie Nozomi, Takumi is killed by her. he wakes up on day 99 and at first doesn't realise he's a zombie

he finds Kurara but something stops him from biting her neck, she flees to the gym where she is surrounded by the other zombies. she flips out and kills all the zombies with a power saw until only Takumi is left

she tells him to go back in time and save everyone from this bad ending, before killing him with the power saw

Kurara is such a good character. two wildly different personalities but both awesome. I love tomato girl so much

also how good is this image 😅

things have got very weird. Yugamu made some pheromone drugs for Takumi and now everyone is in love with him and getting jealous if Takumi shows favor to anyone

the last route I played everyone turned into zombies, and now this 🙃

I fully expect things to go to shit very soon, someone will get driven by jealousy to do something heinous, and/or the pheromone drugs will wear off and everyone will end up hating Takumi for what he did
this game is nuts. I definitely did not have "protagonist becomes a sex cult leader by brainwashing everyone with pheromone drugs" on my bingo card 😅

also, I KNEW IT part 3

I still don't trust Eito one bit though, I suspect he's just pretending to be affected by Takumi's pheromone powers

am at around 90 hours into this game now, and the story and writing is easily amongst the best of any game I've ever played. the way it hides its mysteries, and drip feeds you just enough information as you're going along, but in a totally non-linear way. I said it before but #TheHundredLine is a masterpiece

it throws its characters into hundreds of insane situations and what emerges is beautifully twisted every time. I love this game

got my first ending in the "Cult of Takumi" route on day 51 and it was GRIM AF, like fucking hell that went south quickly

Nozomi convinces Takumi that he has to reverse the effects of the pheromone drug and return everyone else to normal, but Eito overhears the conversation, and it ends with Takumi being drugged so he can't move and has to watch as everyone else beats Nozomi to death in front of him

then he is trapped in his own body forever, unable to move, and his cult members continue to worship him as some sort of living deity

what the fuck, game. it's a nice sunny Saturday afternoon and you drop that on me 😨

#TheHundredLine love tomato girl
gonna dive back in to #TheHundredLine this afternoon, I think. it's been a while!

finished the route I was playing through last year, Chapter 14_B_bbb "The Comedy Route"

everyone got fish heads and there are lots of fish related dialog puns. It even had a Danganronpa style ending where Takumi accused Darumi of being behind it (she wasn't, he was making it up)

#TheHundredLine

it's good to be back, I missed these characters

#TheHundredLine

it's all gone very Danganronpa in "The Mystery Route" and I reached a story lock after someone started picking everyone off one by one! I can see me getting obsessed with this game all over again

#TheHundredLine

welp, I'm right back into a serious #TheHundredLine addiction, this game is amazing and I am constantly blown away by the writing and how each decision leads to a completely different story

I said the other day that Falcom are the only developers crazy enough to make something like the Trails series, and here no-one else but TOO KYO Games and Kazutaka Kodaka could've pulled off this insane masterpiece

getting to spend a lot of time with Darumi in the current route, which is great because I love goblin girl so very much

this game... one minute there's a bit about Darumi ingesting an alien parasite called Retsnom that fuses with her body and causes her to start eating books and squirting pure alcohol out of her arm, and the next you get a conversation about her being abused as a child by her father

this game can be pretty dark in places

I love all the characters in this game but I have a special affection for Darumi. the writing and localisation is so unbelievably good. I really, genuinely care about her 😥

#TheHundredLine

...Darumi noooo!

#TheHundredLine

if by "happy ending" you mean "everyone was absorbed into the weird alien parasite cloning monster who spat perfect copies back out, so is everyone even still human" then sure, Darumi, we got a happy ending 😳

#TheHundredLine

so today, instead of child abuse and suicide talk, Takumi caught something called "super smartass syndrome" which meant if he made a sassy quip there was a 3% chance he would explode and die. Tsubasa also created her secret weapon which is some sort of vibrating massager that activated Takumi's "motivational spot" in combat 😳

there was also a rap battle

this. game. is. amazing.

#TheHundredLine

one of the most memorable tracks on #TheHundredLine soundtrack is "Sirei's Supervision" that plays whenever shady commanding officer and mascot character Sirei is issuing some crazy orders to the Special Defense Unit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJhAvhCaCRQ

Sirei's Supervision

YouTube

well it's all gone to shit in my current route, that's for sure. saved for the night on a massive cliffhanger 😰

#TheHundredLine

but knowing what I know about Hiruko, that she is another time traveler just like Takumi, I wonder why she is acting this way. is she just pretending not to believe him when he said he had come back from the future?

I'm 150 hours into this game and I still have SO MANY questions

best game ever

"The Conspiracy Route" was excellent, if short! lots of new info about the Special Defense Unit's past, it turns out all their memories might be lies, including poor Takumi's memories of dear Karua 😭

nearly every choice led to a game over at the hands of either Sirei or Nigou/Gotoh, they are seriously shady!

so we finally get to see Sirei's brainwashing and memory manipulation technique in action, and it's as fucked up as you might expect, he's one sick bastard

also Eito reappeared after escaping earlier and he has some news, basically Sirei is doing this to all of the students to keep them fighting

#TheHundredLine

oh man, it is ALL KICKING OFF NOW, big revelations about the war and just who the bad guys really are in this situation

#TheHundredLine

I was kinda expecting this, but more revelations about what exactly is going on with the Special Defense Unit 😫 it's all gone fucked up

unsurprisingly, this didn't go down well

so, after finding out they were all clones with fake memories, the Special Defense Unit had to choose whether the continue to fight for humanity or not

the route where you choose to fight for humanity ends with Veh'xness destroying the artificial satellite with a missile, wiping out the last remnants of the human race (oops!)

I can't help feeling that humanity had it coming tbh, they are intending to kill every single Futuran and steal their planet, so I totally sided with Veh'xness here, and it was pretty funny the way it happened

with their reason to continue the fight gone, they decide to stop the final attack, but Sirei tried to force them to fight, and is killed by Nozomi

pretty bleak

#TheHundredLine

Veh'xness is a great villain. she's completely insane, I like her a lot 💀

reached what I can only describe as one of the "canon" endings of #TheHundredLine (if a game with 100 endings can even have a canon route)

after Nozomi kills Sirei the SDU make their way to the defense room in order to stop the missile launch that will eliminate all life on the planet, but find a horrifying sight. "Intercept Mode" has been activated and they must fight three giant robots powered by Shion's undying flames while simultaneously destroying the missiles before they launch

it's an unwinnable fight, one by one they are cut down, and Takumi realises the only way to win is to absorb his fallen comrades cryptoglobin, ensuring they die for real with no possibility of revival

soon Takumi is the only one left standing and he manages to destroy the machine and stop the attack, but in the ensuing explosion he is blown from the building and dies in Nozomi's arms, leaving Nozomi to wander the ruined planet, alone. the last human being in the galaxy

fuuck

#TheHundredLine is a masterpiece. easily amongst the greatest feats of interactive storytelling ever created. it's a beautiful, insane, one of a kind videogame that I will never forget
I still have over 30 endings left to see, and questions I need answering
@COMPU73E am waiting for a sale.

@Sobtanian it is so worth it. I hope you don't bounce off it after I bigged it up so much 😅

(it's a big time commitment for 100%, I'm at 180+ hours and only 2/3rds done)

@COMPU73E they’re a bit marmite for me these kinda games. I either love them and get obsessed or bounce off.

Willing to take a punt at the right price.

@COMPU73E My order did come in a week or two ago, but I started XC2 before it showed up. It’s definitely on my short list, tho.
@COMPU73E you haven't got to the good part yet

thinking about another ending I got last night: after humanity is destroyed by Veh'xness the SDU decide to let the final attack continue and wipe out all life on the planet

after returning in the escape pod after the attack they wake up in the school on "Day 1" with no memories, exactly like the very start of the game and are told that they are the last survivors of a dead planet, tasked with rebuilding civilisation

the guilt and despair of what they had done was too much for them so Sirei offered to wipe their memories so they had a chance at happy lives

I liked this ending, I'd totally play a sequel that carried on from here...

the "multiple Eito's" route is all kinds of fucked up... there's a scene where Takumi commits suicide over 500 times in various different ways while being cheered on by everyone else
I really want to play Shuten Order but I'm not sure if I can handle another Kodaka game right after The Hundred Line 😅 I'll probably need therapy after this is all over
@COMPU73E Shuten Order is kinda... More intense. But imo the English localisation is incredibly bleah
Eva coaches Takemaru how to play poker

...but it turns out Takumi has been brainwashed by Sirei and living in a fantasy world to keep him in line. I had no idea what tf was going on in this route, but I knew something was up and it was honestly pretty creepy

everyone dies at the end no matter which option you pick 😰

after nearly 200 hours I thought I had got to the point where #TheHundredLine could no longer surprise me, and then this fucking incredible game went and did it again

one of Takumi's decisions led to disaster. V'ehxness and the other surviving Futuran commanders win a battle and take over the school. Sirei is killed and the surviving members of the Special Defense Unit are taken prisoner and imprisoned

Takumi is kept separate from the others and interrogated by V'ehxness. however she allows him to ask her questions also and it becomes a philosophical back and forth. the writing is superb

this game, man

finished another route, 76/100 endings now. let's goo!

here's a no-context screenshot of two of my fav characters, Kyoshika and Darumi

#TheHundredLine

V'ehxness is just the best villain, I love her #TheHundredLine

just reached an ending in #TheHundredLine that made me say "what the actual fuck?" out loud

this game

finished another "Box of Calamity" Route, so there were actually TWO ghosts, one was Eva using her Hemoanima to linger on after death, and the other was a Hemoanima Avatar that Takumi's guilty conscience manifested, and the fact that he can do this might explain some of the... weirdness in other routes, especially if he's not aware he was doing it (say, because he is infected by the brain parasite and has blackouts)

Hiruko also had some things to say about being another time traveler, right before she died

(I just reread all that back and it reads like the ramblings of a crazy person, what has this game done to me, aaaaa) 🤯

@COMPU73E I love reading along, no matter how crazy it gets. I'll never be able to put that much time into the game, but I get to experience it at least a little bit. 😁
Thanks for posting about it.
@COMPU73E let me know how you feel about this sub plot when you finished all 100 endings
@COMPU73E which one of the 70 endings is that

@BigShellEvent it was one of the "Box of Calamity" endings where Nozomi (!) suddenly tries to kill Takumi with a giant scythe, and then Takumi wakes up in his room, loads of characters who were previously dead are now alive again and he doesn't remark on it at all, they "win" the final battle and are all happy but when he goes to board the escape pod on day 100 he sees everyone lying dead. the end

I love how creepy this route is

@COMPU73E I simultaneously loved this cluster of story, but also felt it's underdeveloped except for a specific subroute. Like Eva route, I care way more about the locals culture than the same story about [spoiler] like 10 times. Idfk why they even have such a fixation on [spoiler]! It should be a single route like Retsnom and just stop milking it into something that everyone were tired of.

@COMPU73E a few of these routes are so good at holding the mood. It's all mood whiplash where one moment you genuinely have fun with daily lives thing, next moment everything turns to shit, and the underlying sense of things will go wrong is always there.

Tldr idk how the Comedy Route even happened given how well written rest of the game mostly is.

@COMPU73E this route is one of my stand out because how different it is. And I loved it so much

@COMPU73E congratulations. I feel there were lots of lost opportunities, like the Eva route where you never got to interact with the local village, or (spoiler, spoiler), but yes.

This also explains why Takumi can impregnate Eva.

@BigShellEvent I think I'm at 60+ endings now, still a ways to go

@COMPU73E We'll talk more about what I meant!

My structural complaint of THL is IMO they overemphasised a lot of repeating stories (spoiler so can't go into it), yet under developed a few things I really want to hear more about. More about the local civilian culture would hit so well.

Retsnom, my most precious baby route, is perfect as it is

@COMPU73E a few of them really got done DIRTY
@COMPU73E FUCK YES NOW I CAN TALK TO YOU ABOUT THIS GAME

@BigShellEvent I already knew about the "not on Earth" thing and there are still things I don't know yet, like just who the hell is Hiruko? aaaaaa

in my current route Takumi had just escaped with Eva, nearly died, and woken up in the resistance village. was not expecting that!

@COMPU73E i don't love this route because it's such a lost opportunity. We never learnt much about the local culture at all

@COMPU73E PS how good is Eva when you finally got to meet her? Eva, Tsubasa, and [spoiler] are my favourites for being so normal. Also a fan of Takumi/Eva, as well as Takumi/Tsubasa for this reason. Unfortunately for someone canonically pansexual, seems like none of the guys are quite as compatible with him.

I'm just so glad you can literally ever ever romance Darumi. You become blood siblings at some point lol you've done that route, and in another route Takumi pretty much ended up rightfully worshipping Darumi for being probably one of the best people. But you know Darumi doesn't want to fuck anyone outside of depressing eroge.

@COMPU73E with what little context I have, it made me think of Ender's game. I stopped reading after the first book and didn't like the movie adaptation all that much, but the reveal at the end is a brutal gut-punch.
@COMPU73E I feel so sad that I accidentally got one of the "true" endings too early, so all these really good routes stopped having the impact it could have.
@BigShellEvent I assume the true endings are the ones behind the story locks, I haven't been past any of those yet

@COMPU73E One yes, the other no. Interestingly the "true ending" that is the continuation of THL1 and answered most of the THL1 questions is not locked.

The other locked "true ending" offered wayyyyyyy more. Like wait what the fuck a lot more happened woooaofhkdf;asjf;jsa;fje

@COMPU73E once you finish let's talk about which route is the shittest for Takumi. (Not which one is worst written because that's Comedy route)
@BigShellEvent oh for sure, I'm looking forward to it! I'm gonna be talking about this game for years 🙂
@COMPU73E for what it's worth, while I disagree that every ending is the real ending because several were quite under developed, it most certainly has a clear Kazutaka Kodaka's Precious Route, and a Kotaro Uchikoshi's Precious Route. I liked the one that deviated from the first game's main story a bit more.
