We really need a real alternative to #Discord. No, #IRC and #Signal are NOT alternatives. IRC doesn't have half of the features Discord offers, like message history, voice and video features, and Signal is more like an iMessage, Messenger, WhatsApp etc. alternative, not suitable for large communities due to the lack of "guilds" and "channels".
I've tried #Matrix and #Stoat (formerly Revolt) before and wasn't impressed with either of them. Matrix has so many issues regarding encryption, it's a headache (the bridges are cool though), and Stoat is still pretty much a beta product, self-hosting it is painful, because of the clients needing to be recompiled to change "homeservers".
@ymstnt when did you last try out matrix and did you report the issues you ran into to the devs, element is focusing heavily on fixing those issues when they arise, not perfect but much better then a few years ago

@haise I'm using it daily, and still running into issues. And yes, I've reported some. Sometimes messages just do not get delivered, either temporarily, sometimes permanently. Quite a lot of outages happen as well.

The voice/video features were unusable a few months ago, we ditched that entirely. I looked into hosting a Marix homeserver myself, it's just not worth it.

@ymstnt I'm using it daily as well in encrypted rooms and it's so much better then it was a few years ago, with gomuks web for PC and ele x/schildinext for android very few utd issues and was on envs before they announced it was being shut down sadly
