Hm, did something happen over at Discord?
@matrix seems some people don't like to be required to provide photoid https://discord.com/press-releases/discord-launches-teen-by-default-settings-globally
Discord Launches Teen-by-Default Settings Globally

Discord is announcing enhanced teen safety features rolling out globally that reinforce its long-standing commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive experience for users over the age of 13.

@matrix They'll now also learn the pleasures of
"Your session isn't verified"
and
"Could not decrypt message"

@Natanox @matrix

I'm trying out a new Matrix client called *commet* and I am, in fact, having the pleasure of `Failed to decrypt event` in my DMs x3

@matrix i just hope this is not an isolated event and this users last

@matrix Assuming this is showing people deleting their accounts, I'm in this picture!

Honestly forgot I even had one, but today's news reminded me, lol.

@not3ottersinacoat It's showing people creating accounts on matrix.org, which is one of the homeservers of Matrix, which is a Discord alternative. See also https://joinmatrix.org/guide/matrix-vs-discord/.
Matrix vs. Discord

It’s time to ditch Discord. Imagine a place where users are actually respected. Join Matrix, the federated chat platform that does exactly that.

@matrix Yep, digital ID is what happened to it.

It seems you guys are doing it too from what I heard.

@matrix getting users is the easy part, keeping them is harder

@matrix

Please code a group voice chat. I had to install a plugin to get something like what is in discord...except it's worse and unusable right now.

Otherwise I would be using matrix/element right now.

@matrix @hazelich They've given up on Element a long time ago, and Element X is nowhere near the necessary feature set to retain users who want these things (like, most of them). The request for voice channels is probably being repeated for a decade now.

@Natanox @matrix

I'll run a private Stoat server eventually. I'm waiting for my friends to realize how stupid Discord is becoming before I devote time and money into setting such a thing up.

@hazelich @matrix Haven't tried Stoat / Revolt in a while, might do so as well. Rocket.chat seemingly went in a… certainly "interesting" direction (4 out of 6 of their partners are related to the US army).

Hopefully Stoat delivers, we direly need an alternative and Matrix isn't it.

Edit: They apparently do not. :/

@Natanox @matrix @hazelich What features are you missing? Serious question. Threads, spaces, calls (audio and video) are here.

@hywan @matrix @hazelich Element X doesn't have any voice or video features and Element is a broken mess with horrendous UX. When adding Jitsi it somewhat has it but it's not even remotely comparable in usability to Discord or others, more like a slow, worse version of Skype. Without Jitsi and with the "experimental" Voice channels you get to hear your friend taking a shit because you can't even disable auto-gain or properly setup anything.

Not to mention the total mess that is its encryption.

@hywan @matrix @hazelich Sorry if that's not specific enough, but I really don't even know where to start given it's such a mess. Neither the native nor third-party clients manage to work around all the issues. They also openly said they don't really work on Element anymore since it's supposed to be replaced by Element X, but that's not even trying to be a full client right now but merely a mobile instant messenger - without call feature (therefore failing to attract anyone).
@Natanox @matrix @hazelich I don’t know why you keep saying calls are not supported. Element X supports it and soon will replace Element Classic (which is horrible, I know).
Element X

Matrix, the open protocol for secure decentralised communications

@Natanox @matrix @hazelich This is matrix.org, not element.io. Gonna fix that.

@Natanox not sure when was the website last updated but I do have calling in Element X (F-Droid version) @hywan
@flaki @hywan Currently downloading the client to try it, my info on it is obviously wrong!

@flaki @hywan Well, I'd like to try it, but as per usual (I'm sorry, but this IS normal) I'm hard-stuck in the verification process. My desktop client cheerfully tells me that Element X is verified, but Element X apparently still waits for an answer? I can't go back or do anything, the app simply locks up with a spinning loading symbol after confirming the emojis.

This already is one step further than usual though, last time it just didn't ask any other client for verification.

@Natanox @hywan yeah I also routinely get stuck on new client verification despite having every key, backup etc. stored in a password manager... :(
@Natanox @flaki Can you send a report/problem/rageshake please? Are you on matrix.org?
@Natanox @matrix @hazelich Also, don’t be sorry. It’s important to express your frustration so that we can solve them :-).

@Natanox @matrix @hazelich Good news: Element X does have audio and video calls.

Encryption is almost invisible today.

There is stuff to complain about. But calls are pretty stable today. I use it multiple times per day.

@hywan @matrix @hazelich Their website states the opposite? It specifically says it only got E2EE and Multi-Language, not anything else.
https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/element-x/

Also it doesn't appear to have any desktop client? At least the only one on Flathub is the old one and I can't find any github repo for something aside from Android or iOS. That doesn't make it a viable Discord alternative. 🤔 Just one for Signal, if shit hits the fan over there at some point.

Element X

Matrix, the open protocol for secure decentralised communications

@Natanox @matrix @hazelich Element X works on macOS. Otherwise there is Element Web and Element Desktop.

@hywan @matrix @hazelich That's the old client though, which I thought we agreed on does suck quite a bit. 😉

Don't have a mac to test the desktop client if that's the only desktop system for now.

@Natanox @matrix @hazelich Well, Element Web is less bad than Element Classic. It is okay-ish you ask me :-p.

@hazelich @matrix

There is commet.chat that has what you are looking for. Its still pretty raw but it has the feel of discord aswell.

Element-call is the closet thing matrix has otherwise

@hazelich @matrix

It also supports matrix sticker <3

@matrix Just the usual enshitification ...
@matrix What is the timezone associated with those pulses? Or is it some timezone/region that is missing?
Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month

Starting in March, all Discord users will have a “teen” experience by default unless they complete age verification using a video selfie or ID.

The Verge
@matrix let’s wait and see how quickly that spike in the graph drops off when people start to actually try to use Matrix…
@matrix you know shit is bad when people are actually joining Matrix
