Dear people using OCLP, etc, to patch:

Probably not the case of folks on Mastodon, but look, you're doing something that messes with the state of modern OS versions.

If you're not capable of understanding what patching does, how it works, and what it breaks, you probably should not be patching, you know?

@dnanian

I’m not likely to, as I had to look up the acronym to know what you were even referencing.

I’d be more likely to WANT to use such to install a legacy OSon new silicon, rather than install a new OS in outdated silicon, given the state of modern platform OS hurting so bad these days. But there are virtual machines or Parallels I guess. Although that isn’t going to solve a lot of issues.

@Chancerubbage Yeah, well, that's even harder. But yes, lots of people try to install newer OS versions on older hardware, since Apple stops supporting old hardware after 7 years.

That's a bad thing on Apple's end, I think. But it is what it is, and once you start using patches to get around it, you end up in highly unsupportable situations.

@dnanian @Chancerubbage I use OCLP on a old iMac and I'm fairly happy with the result. I wouldn't dare complain to a third party dev if an app or another were do "misbehave" under that environment though.
@cortig @Chancerubbage I think maybe you're the only one, Corentin. :-)
@dnanian @Chancerubbage but at least I understand what patching does, breaks, etc. :-)
@cortig @Chancerubbage Well, you can't tell all the things it breaks. We've seen some very, very strange stuff beyond what it does to the SSV.
@dnanian @Chancerubbage Sure. Most of the issues I've seen were affecting data storage and Metal, which reaches pretty far. But if you want to use an old iMac as some sort of limited device for the kids to do their homework on in a browser or another, it's not the end of the World.
@dnanian @cortig @Chancerubbage any chance you could write a few words about these ssv issues (in your blog or release notes) so that one could point an oclp dev to it? Coming from you this sounds like data-loss-shaped troubles… 😬
@woefi @cortig @Chancerubbage Yeah, no. I don't want to wade into the whole area "officially"...
@dnanian fair enough. No problem.
