I saw them in the mid-70s when they were the "Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" a surrealist musical street theater troupe from LA. Merging 30s jazz, West African percussion, and vaudevillian chaos, they were a "living museum" of obscure media history. After Richard left to film the cult classic Forbidden Zone, Danny Elfman took the helm, shedding the elaborate costumes and 15-piece ensemble, transforming the group into New Wave Oingo Boingo. He also scored Batman.
