I'm moving back into the "get your favorite media in physical form" camp.

@btp My preferred method right now is to purchase DRM-free copies of what I want.
#Bandcamp and #GoG ( #GoodOldGames ) are my friends when it comes to this.

That, and my approach to dealing with #abandonware ... which is to just copy it. Since copying abandonware neither causes financial loss nor causes property loss to the IP owner, it is not theft, I would argue.

@golemwire Are you sure you wanted to put all these labels on this POST? We use them to keep up with topics of interest. We don’t mind a few misclassified POSTs but I’m not sure you get them right, this happens every once in a while with beginners. HMU if you need help?
@oceane No, those hashtags were all meant to be there, # abandonware in particular.

@oceane I tried to think through why those tags might not be relevant. But anyone on the GoG tag will see that Bandcamp is useful for the same DRM-free thing but for music instead of videogames, and vice-versa.

People on the abandonware tag will see an argument for copying abandonware.

@golemwire I may be wrong, but I suggest people should be looking for the relevant tags (e.g. abandonware or DRM) instead of being kinda spoonfed with the most common marketplaces in these areas. There are other tools than Mastodon for finding out information, and I suggest people should promote these other tools instead of treating Mastodon as a ubiquitous platform: thinking about RSS feeds, the IRC protocol, Emacs/Lem, etc. Windows and Android are bottom-of-the-barrel platforms for this, but things will work on macOS, Fedora, and even on hobby postmarketOS phones (I make no guarantee as to the reliability of phone calls).

I have no intent of scolding you, but your relationship to computing may be harming you.

@oceane For me, one of the points of fedi is finding random things mostly related to what I follow, broadening my horizons in addition to giving me what I expect. We might have somewhat different usecases.
But tagging # Bandcamp and # GoG may have been too much of a stretch on my part, I can see that. I probably should have tagged just # DRM and # abandonware , FWIW.
