I'm starting a new series of articles, "The Hacker's Guide to Home Automation". The first article is out now, and focuses on simple ways to add "smart device" functionality to basic appliances. Please have a read and let me know what you think!

Smartifying your devices - Sinclair Studios

"Smartifying" a device is the process of taking a basic appliance, and adding functionality to integrate it into a Smart Home environment. In this article we'll look through the process of smartifying a rice cooker just by adding a smart plug, and modelling its state in Home Assistant.

@TassSinclair I've got a bunch of smart home stuff going on, so I'll be reading along with this. That said, I also think we more than need a series of "what is wrong with you - there's absolutely no reason for a smart fridge/juicer/curtains/whatever x you know manually operated stuff is fine, right?" articles somewhere.

@trib That's fair. My focus on making devices "smart" is mostly to remind me when I've forgotten to do something, and uplifting existing technology so it can either report its state or do the thing on my behalf.

Less e-waste, more purpose-specific augmentation.

@trib BTW, critical feedback is welcome, especially in terms of flow and ease of visualisation.
