Every now and again I remember that the Super Brain Genius Number One Special Boy Who Really Wishes Actual Engineers Would Take Him Seriously got shitcanned from PayPal because he thought it was a good idea to ditch UNIX and move to Windows NT
Truly the canonical example of An Idiot's Conception Of A Smart Person
JFC he's such a repellent loser, and he knows it, and it *burns* his soul every day
Imagine having a trillion dollars and no friends though
@pikesley i'm sure half of his craziness is that he can't buy a personality, like he thought he could.
@pikesley do what guv
πŸš€ Elon Musk, Windows vs Linux, and His PayPal Firing πŸ’»πŸ›‘

Introduction When we think of Elon Musk, we think of big tech innovations: Tesla, SpaceX,...

DEV Community
@pikesley well fuck me
@pikesley to be fair, I ended up a Windows dev myself for a long time just because the games were better. I know. I know.
@rgarner @pikesley I was a Windows sysadmin for a while. I literally have PTSD from NT 4.
@hedders @rgarner @pikesley Where I worked we had some windows source code as we were contracted to change some aspects. NT was commonly referred to as Not Tested.
@pikesley @rgarner Reminds me of the geniuses at SGI a few years earlier ... they wanted to ditch IRIX in favor of NT, and their MIPS processors in favor of Itanium.
@acsawdey @pikesley @rgarner really, the material CEOs are made of is not the best…
@pikesley IIRC it was so he could rewrite it all in COM(!)

@pikesley

I interviewed at PayPal 20-something years ago. They were an HP-UX shop, IIRC. Good times.

@pikesley His only genuine knowledgebase is front-line programming. He's as ignorant about backends and networks as most other people are.
@wesdym TF is "front-line programming" now?

@pikesley Someone who understands user-facing applications, but not administrator-facing backends. A coder. A diddler. Someone who knows how to jack off, but nothing about evolution or genetics.

At his peak, Elmo was basically a ginned-up database coder. He doesn't understand deeper systems or networks administration, because he's never had to. He convinces himself he knows things he doesn't, and bullshits about them.

He never understood how Unix was superior to Windows NT.

@pikesley wait *that* guy of all guys is the exception to the supposed rule "no one got fired for buying Microsoft"?

Ha!

@pikesley I was about to say "do what guv" but it's deja vu all over again https://mastodon.social/@rgarner/113845104137878808
@pikesley I believe he also wanted to rewrite the website in C because "it's faster"
@pikesley @Unixbigot Is *that* what happened?

I supported PayPal a few times after this, and their Linux infrastructure is by far the most painstakingly utilisation-optimised, performance-monitored pile of servers I’ve ever seen.
The idea of changing *distros* makes me wonder if it would be possible, at any price. The idea of that workload on Windows redefines ’absurd’.
