I've spent the last hour trying to figure out why my internet is slow.

Seems like my local network/devices are fine and I managed to narrow the problem down to host in Cloudflare's network (which is half of the internet nowadays).

Instead of the healthy ping times of a few dozen ms, I'm getting almost 300ms ping times and over 50% packet loss.

I guess I should talk to my ISP (Telekom Hungary) but I'd be curious if anyone has a clue. I've collected a bunch of traces with the excellent `asn` tool: https://gist.github.com/salomvary/6d200a7260dc3926430b8e3797e98423

When using a different uplink (Yettel Hungary) everything seems fine.

I was about to contact my ISP this morning and the problem seems to have cleared. Same route, 25ms ping time instead of 280ms. Welcome to the internet, I guess.

Well, the problem is not gone. I went down the rabbit hole and set up a ping exporter with Prometheus and Grafana (nice to have these already set up in my homelab).

And it looks weird. Ping times fluctuate between 25ms and 200ms, averaging around 100ms. Curious how this will look like over a few days, would not surprise if this was some sort of routing bottleneck during daytime busy hours.

@mrc it’s because of Telekom artificially slowing down CloudFlare. https://netzbremse.de/en/

Can’t wait to move away from them. They suck.

Netzbremse - Deutsche Telekom is throttling the internet!

If you are a customer of Deutsche Telekom and some websites just won't load, then we might have the solution to your problem!

@garriguv Hmm interesting. I'm on Hungarian Telekom (subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom) though, I wonder if they practice the same throttling.

Maybe time to switch providers (a new ISP started serving over fiber since I set up this cable contract with Telekom).
