When you can’t build anything new due to prices of RAM, Storage, and Processors, you go back to your HomeLab roots.

#homelab

@technotim yeah, I'd be rocking some old equipment too, if I could afford the electricity to do #HomeLab|bing...
@technotim @kkarhan I just ordered the same board on eBay! There are Broadwell Xeon E5 SKUs with 55W TDP. And on a single CPU board the power draw should not be too crazy when the server does mostly nothing. But I cringe when I see that 1U case with a battery of supersonic screamers inside!

@technotim @kiraso yeah, and the problem with server heatsinks is that they rely on high static pressure, so swapping them for Noctuas (they don't have the IndustrialPPC in 40mm!) will not work sufficiently.

  • Best you can do is like with the Tesla/Grid cards and shove a shroud onto the rear to pull air out of the chassis and purposefully configure it to be slower if you can't transplant into a bigger chassis and add a better cooler on it.

But even a 4U chonker like a HP Z600 is gonna scream like a PHAT Xbox 360 whem equipped with Dual Xeon X5550's, and good luck trying to make Noctuas work with those... This thing can max out it's 600W PSU when you shove a GPU in it!

  • #WhatsMissing is a modern Zalman #Reserator * and Server Socket Liquid Cooling adaptors (with like low-profile PCIe slot brackets and spill-free couplings to hook them up to a liquid cooling loop, because then a bank of Noctuas will keep the rest cool quietly...

Attached: 2 images @[email protected] I've seen fanless watercooling but that required a huge-ass radiator like the Zalman #Reserator [1](https://www.newegg.com/zalman-liquid-cooling-system/p/N82E16835118111) or [2](https://www.guru3d.com/review/zalman-reserator-2-review/page-4/) if not [unhealthy amounts of regular radiators](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfbcD248n4Y) tho personally I'd rather use a [car radiator](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbRe1k2k0ow) or [external chiller](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itQLBGQyTX8)…
