Funny thing about that Romans 13 reference: in context, it’s Saint Paul making a subtle dig at the Roman Empire by saying that Caesar is under the authority of a higher God (and not a god himself). Also, as a Taiwanese theologian points out, in a constitutional democracy the *constitution* is the government, so Saint Paul’s admonition to “submit to government” would obligate all Christians to obey the constitution and not particular political figures. This also obligates us to #resist.

Further, Saint Paul is effectively telling the church in Rome: “if they’re going to martyr you anyway, let it be for reasons of godly love and grace and not tax evasion.”

@FrChazzz

The position of the Taiwanese theologian you refer to seems striking to me. Can you provide me with the reference? Would love to dive into it.

@ebenezerfan1990 Theologian's name is Sicong Zhang and I learned about his take from a quote in an essay by Sze-Kar Wan ("Reading Romans in the Midst of Empire") in the volume *The New Testament Around the World*. The link provided in the citation is this, but it's in Chinese...
