My fosdem talk is up!

I make a case for more platforms to support the ActivityPub client API, and how we should look beyond microblogging for future growth of the ‘verse

FOSDEM 2026 - Unlocking development with ActivityPub Client to Server API

In the talk I shoutout some projects who are supporting the ActivityPub API

One glaring omission is the FedBox/Oni projects by @mariusor, who I have been working with over the past while!

I also mention a bunch awesome Fediverse projects which have developed their own API, no shade on them, the spec imho is incredibly bare. I quote @Gargron on that one.

I end the talk with an invitation for devs and non-developers alike to submit some user-stories about what they would want from a general AP client

@django I erm... can't seem to run the video on the page. It seems like waterfox can't do it for some reason.

@django Great talk! I’m a huge advocate for C2S and would love to see it happen. It’s one of the biggest missed opportunities for ActivityPub, and we could do some really incredible things with it.

For things like notifications, I almost wonder whether it would be useful to create a notification activity object? Something like that might give developers what they need for standard notifications across clients, with the server accounting for Read / Unread state.

@django
Peertube in particular has huge potential. We just need to make it easier for people to seed more, monetize without surveillance and moderate at scale.

If we nail the first two things, costs go down, incentives go up and we explode. If we nail the third, the Fedi stays the option people want to use.

@django Yes! A lot could be done with the fediverse:creator meta tag feature, which has an authors array. This could align with @terry's Byline spec extension for RSS and the right way to do multiple authors in WordPress — which collaborative editing and agentic authors will need. At scale it's an identity, provenance, and distribution control tool.
@django @terry I am doing and planning some explorations of this, would love to chat more about it.
