I see politicians are pushing for mandatory helmet and "high vis" vests on bicycles. "High vis" doesn't work on overcast days or at all at night. If you think an ABS EPS helmet and a piece of day glo fabric will protect a cyclist from two tons of Wankpanzer, you're wrong. Here's a high vis rucksack cover vs a black hat in shadow.
Vests and helmets are not about safety in traffic or preventing death and suffering. They're about shifting blame onto the vulnerable road users.
Didn't wear a vest or helmet? Sorry you caused the accident and deserved it.
They also add friction to the process of getting out on a bike on any given trip, potentially reducing cycling numbers. Which I suspect in many cases is also deliberate.
