There are other characters in popular anime that are supposed to be adult women. Frieren, for example, is supposed to be a centuries-old elf and is attractively drawn (if you can ignore the authorial setting which justifies genocide). But Frieren is still basically an adolescent who hasn't thought about any of the important issues of her life, hasn't come to terms with her sexuality in any real way etc.
