🔐 By community request, you can now unlock your vault with a passkey,

Available now in the web app and with Chromium-based browser extensions (rolling out this week).

Why passkeys?

✅ Faster than typing your master password

✅ Phishing-proof: only work on originating website

Requires a compatible PRF-capable setup

@bitwarden It would be ideal if my Firefox could function as a passkey vault; otherwise, it simply becomes another form of vendor lock-in by Apple.

The primary challenge with passkeys is the limited number of compatible vaults.
@kotaro Hi there, you can also store the passkey for your Bitwarden vault on a security key protected by pin.
@bitwarden Nah, in that case I'd have to buy a YubiKey or something.

I can't keep the passkey for opening my Bitwarden vault inside Bitwarden itself.

But yeah, I'll admit that buying a FIDO hardware key for this is probably the best way to go for me.

@bitwarden

Why is this bit coming to mind?

@danhugo Hi Dan! If you already have a Yubikey lying around, it's a great backup option for seamless vault access, and you can protect the Yubikey with a pin.

@bitwarden

I do. I'm totally fine with how things are working.

But I read the comments on the post 😂

@bitwarden @danhugo Any word on when we can see Webauthn-prf support enter Firefox proper, @firefoxwebdevs? From the looks of this issue - https://github.com/mozilla/standards-positions/issues/798 - it would appear to not be a near-term roadmap item.

@jackf723 @danhugo this isn't a feature that I'm very familiar with personally, but https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Web_Authentication_API/WebAuthn_extensions suggests this was shipped in 139
Web Authentication extensions - Web APIs | MDN

The Web Authentication API has a system of extensions — extra functionality that can be requested during credential creation (navigator.credentials.create()) or authentication (navigator.credentials.get()) operations. This article explains how to request WebAuthn extensions, retrieve information about the responses from those requests, and the available extensions — including browser support and expected inputs and outputs.

@bitwarden

Definitely looking forward to selecting a clip for this one…

Password managers' promise that they can't see your vaults isn't always true

Contrary to what password managers say, a server compromise can mean game over.

@bitwarden May we please have this for the Android app?
@bitwarden Interesting and actually would be great if there was an option to store bitwardens passkey on icloud keychain for example and other passkeys, passwords on bitwarden it self. In my current setup bitwarden passkey would be stored on bitwarden itself.
@bitwarden Got answer on Reddit, thanks ;) Works like a charm.

@bitwarden Oooh, I’ve been waiting for this! The convenience of a PIN, but with the cached vault encryption of a master password or Windows Hello.

I assume this works on Linux as well?

Thanks y’all! :D

Edit: Covered in the docs already. Sick!

@bitwarden I've updated Bitwarden Browser extension to 2026.1.0 version, but don't see option to unlock extension using passkey. What am I missing?
Log In With Passkeys | Bitwarden

This article will show you how to log in to the web vault using a passkey instead of your master password.

Bitwarden
@bitwarden i'm using Vivaldi.
@bitwarden Don't see option to unlock with passkey.
@sirrichard Hi there, can you confirm if you are on version 2026.1.0?

@sirrichard Are you on macOS or Windows? I just did a fresh install on macOS and got the unlock with passkey prompt.

If you're on mac, can you try reinstalling (just make sure you have your account credentials handy).

@bitwarden Yes I'm on macos. I should reinstall extension?
@bitwarden Yeah, fresh install and it works.
