Please, I beg, if you're posting about a new release of the cool thing you made, include a small description of what it is and what it does.

It's hard to boost "libencarbulator turbo++ 2.8a release is now available! Now supports configuring reticulation of splines" in a vacuum, and I want nothing more than to boost the cool thing you made

@mr_daemon this, but also: the number of encarbulator dot com websites I've seen that also do not tell you what it is/does on the main page, or even anywhere within a click or two, is too damn high!
@wez Yeah, multiple frameworks are like this. Tells you all about the cool features, but you have no idea wtf it is for until you find the examples and then go `OH it's a task queue` or whatever.
@mr_daemon @wez it's even worse now since most websites first blast you in the face about some AI bullshit they put in
@Chase @mr_daemon @wez that’s good though because it serves as an immediate β€œyou’re out”.
@wez oh so it's not just me. I swear so many websites just say "this awesome please use it" without saying what it is
@mr_daemon
I have been waiting for the splines to be reticulated for over 20 years.
@mr_daemon The "curse of knowledge" is real. Especially amongst software devs. "Everybody knows about my product! No need to give them an overview." See: open source projects; enterprise web pages.
@mr_daemon Cannot agree more. Brag more and so some self-promotion of the stuff you've built!
@mr_daemon it encarbulates stuff, I would hope?

@mr_daemon if the profile and the website and the link to the release explain it, does the toot really need it?

I see it as a trade-off between more noise for those who know (which are probably most followers) and the reduced effort for those who don't know. The hope is that the latter can find out easily.

Example is the last release announcement of @teamtype where we didn't include the explanation. I'm open to include it in the future, but it's not yet 100% clear to me that that's better.

@mr_daemon @teamtype @zormit

> if the profile and the website and the link to the release explain it, does the toot really need it?

Yes, absolutely.

@zormit @teamtype Honestly, I quite appreciate that the github release page linked there has a short description at the top, for people landing here, so they don't have to go find your readme and hope for the best. I should do the same, actually.

But also a single sentence like "We just released v 8.0 of Froobulator: a cake frosting control interface" or whatnot, goes a long way.

@mr_daemon @retrotechshop
Also don't say "Our new product [ThisThing] is available - it's like [ThatThing*]" - *I've never heard of ThatThing either, so saying it's "like" it is telling me nothing. πŸ™„
@SmartmanApps
The only exception where that makes sense is if its sole purpose is to be like ThatThing. But then you phrase it differently.

"ThisThing, a free software alternative of the proprietary ThatThing, is now available!"

Other than that, yeah, I agree.
@mr_daemon @retrotechshop

@mr_daemon

Also please put this description on the website for your thing!

There are so many websites now that don't give any clue as to what they actually are or do. Adding a simple "About" link to a straightforward explanation of the thing would be brilliant (imagine you're writing the Wikipedia page for your thing rather than marketing hype).

@FediThing @mr_daemon > imagine you're writing the Wikipedia page for your thing rather than marketing hype
I think this is good advice.

@mr_daemon Oups, I should have known to do better announcing at https://floss.social/@ariel/116012863584455141 :-(

Thanks for the reminder.

We are delighted to announce Ariel OS v0.3.0, featuring support for BLE, a sensor abstraction, and many other new features and updates. https://ariel-os.org/blog/ariel-os-0.3.0/ #embedded #RustLang #IoT

@mr_daemon we're still stuck on libencarbulator turbo++ 1.7 because of some other dependencies #techdebt
@mr_daemon Gachastuck still in development now still doesn't support downloading and playing the game

@mr_daemon

Absolutely agree.πŸ‘

Is this OK: https://nrw.social/@HaraldKi/116017691942879440

There is obviously a tradeoff between describing what it is, and what is new given the message length limit. But, hmm, reevaluating, the former is probably more important as absolutely nobody knows what is is anyway.

(Could't resist this ultimate chance for some self promotion. πŸ˜‰ )

New 1.1.0 Lightweight Unit Test Runner for JavaScript --- LutruJS It got DX (developer experience) improvements: both, test functions and test instances, can be switched off more easily (like you may want during debugging), avoiding hassles with linters/compilers about unused code. Tell me your preferred name for this package as the current one sounds somewhat awkward. @mr_daemon finally the new libencarbulator, I almost missed it!
