6 years living in Germany and learning the language and it only occurred to me today that Birkenstock was a common noun.
Birkenstock, birch stick. Looks even more obvious in English.

@triple One thing to consider – “stock” can also take the meaning of the English equivalent, for example “Bienenstock” is “bee storage” rather than “bee stick”
