The Upfield bike path is going to be closed for at least a year between 2028 and 2030 while they do the Brunswick level crossings removals on the Upfield Train Line.

This means detouring the > 2500 people that use this path everyday down some side streets.

The more direct alternative is Sydney Rd which is 40km/h but a very busy shopping street, tram route and extension of the Hume Hwy (for people avoiding paying the toll on Citylink).

Sydney Rd has no cycling infrastructure.

The winding detour that has been detailed in the "Summary of Transport Provisions" document for the level crossing removal project goes down a bunch of relatively quiet side streets.

There is also some very...uhh...optimistic sections on busy 60km/h Brunswick Rd without any bicycle infrastructure and a few sections where riders will need to be be filtering in a narrow section between parked cars and cars waiting at the level crossing.

Just these sections make this detour high enough stress to put off a whole bunch of riders. This detour is not appropriate for children.

The detour is estimated to add 1km to the trip and 5mins. But that feels like a significant underestimate as many of the busy road crossings are awkward, have no infrastructure and will be more awkward with that many other cyclists adding extra time.

The report says they may do:
Pop up bike lanes, additional road line marking (i.e., sharrows), bicycle activated warning signs to alert drivers of cyclists, and advocacy to local and state governments for temporary restricted parking to increase safety of
cyclists.

But it's unlikely they're do these at the places that matter the most.
They definitely won't want to put in a protected bike lane on Brunswick Rd.

Making the right turn from Brunswick Rd in to Sydney Rd requires crossing multiple lanes of busy 60km/h traffic to get in to the right turn lane at the intersection or doing a hook turn from this spot at Sydney Rd. Both of these spots will need large painted bike boxes to accommodate the expected number of bicycles making this right turn.

There is also this bit of painted bike lane on the south end of Sydney Rd that allows you to be illegally overtaken by two cars at once which would be a great revenue raiser if the 1m law was ever enforced.

@jessta seems like a very bad idea to send anyone down brunswick road, especially when park street and barkly are right there
@crumbleneedy The Upfield path is the only way to get to Park St from the North without riding on Brunswick Rd.
If the crossing at Barkly St is open then that's certainly a possibility. I'd much rather ride 100m on Sydney Rd than 200m on Brunswick Rd.
