@samloonie

Yeah, I just reported it to Mastodon dot Social, which will probably be a complete waste of time

My instance admins/mods are usually pretty on top of this sort of thing

re: @Sportsbots.xyx

"This seems like a really bad idea. This sportsbots.xyz instance is making a new fediverse account for every tweet that it mirrors over from X."

@FinchHaven @samloonie @moderators

So many accounts over there, spam.

@ai6yr

@samloonie

Well then

Don't know if you saw any of this, but apparently Mastodon dot Social just turned off its two public firehose feeds almost one hour ago:

"Mastodon.social Staff @staff

"As previously announced, live feeds are now disabled on our servers by default.

We don't think they provide a good experience on our server, but feel free to reach out to us if you'd like to still see them.

Jan 6 Mastodon.social Staff @staff

We plan to disable the "live feeds" of the local and federated timelines on mastodon.social within in the next couple of weeks. They are already disabled on mastodon.online. While these feeds can be useful on smaller, topical or regional servers, they have limited use on larger servers like ours."

We took a closer look at this account and domain, and after some discussion, we blocked the subdomain ext.sportsbots.xyz, which is the origin of the auto-generated accounts that cross-post from elsewhere.

The reported account itself appears not to be doing anything that violates our policies, and some of our users do follow them. That said, we definitely understand the annoyance, and will keep an eye on the account.

Thanks for your report!
