Why is Ottawa's air quality so bad?

@mariellequinton It's funny you should mention this... Two nights ago my wife was outside looking at the full moon and she noticed some odd smell, she asked me to come outside and see if I noticed it TOO, and there was a distinct sort of musty smell, for lack of a better description. I was outside this evening, leaving a friend's house near Manotick, and I also thought the air smelled a little peculiar. Not sure what's up though, but I see AccuWeather is reporting poor air quality especially north of Ottawa. Something is up:

@AlexBlock Purple Air has it bad kind of all over the city
@mariellequinton Ohhhhhh that explains a lot! Not sure either, but wow PM2.5 of 50 at the airport is bad πŸ™…
@mariellequinton usually use of firewood-fuelled fireplaces on the Quebec side (largely) drifting over here.
@jessrawk It seemed unusually bad yesterday, but Gatineau seemed ok?
@jessrawk But if wood burning is causing numbers like that, we really need to ban it 😱
@mariellequinton my understanding from previous years is that many homes on the Quebec side at least supplement with that kind of heating. So when the wind is right and the weather is cold, we get a lot of the smoke over here.
@jessrawk It's definitely worse in the evenings, so that's more than likely people using wood burning. There must've been something extra yesterday to make the numbers that bad. Definitely time for more wood burning regulations though.
@mariellequinton Yeah. Usually the surges are the wind patterns unfortunately.
