i've always thought it was weird that mages just wear robes and not armor in most settings. surely a bit of leather armor wouldn't hurt movement that much. @xvln d&d 3 making a "buckler" out of mithril reduced the spell casting penalty to nothing, so you'd get high level wizards with a single armored forearm

irl there's a pretty specific order people tended to armor up in, so now i'm imagining wizard hats enlarged to fit helmets underneath and staves that magically project shields
