i don't really want to hear anymore about how ai "works for me" or "doesn't work for me" or anything like that

this is conceding the framing of the debate on totally self-centered terms and ignoring the massive societal effects of this hideous technology

this is how capitalism trains you to think and it's wild to see how many people still have these individualism brainworms even when they can clearly see the societal cost and it also impacts them specifically

@ana do you feel the same about open source locally run AI? Also are you talking about LLMs or photo/video generation or both?
@moosecalendar this is in reference to a previous boost really so i would start there: https://phpc.social/@Crell/115998212669441825

I may regret this at some point, but I felt the need to put down in writing how I feel about this moment in the tech industry. It is not kind. You may well be insulted by it. If you are... then you really should question yourself. https://www.garfieldtech.com/blog/selfish-ai #AI #LLM #Programming

@ana And most people - even bright people I know - part of the self-indulgent autopilot mode that is destroying agency and critical thinking.
@ana I'm part of the developers who resist the systemic use of AI in their work, but we're not numerous ๐Ÿซฃ. Boycotting it in our personal lives is already a huge action โœŒ๐Ÿผ

@ana AI is just turbocharge for capitalist exploitation and alienation and asking to go back to the time when the exploitation was just right and didn't have a bunch of accelerant sprayed all over it isn't going to work in this system.

but i also have no idea what I can do aside from an individualist critique because broadly it doesn't seem to be easily recognized that this isn't going to get better unless capitalism ends. the article referenced here doesn't seem to fully grasp that either.

it's just depressing.

@ana @mhoye Yes! From a purely productivity viewpoint (i.e. churning out something, anything, vaguely right), as someone with Pathological Demand Avoidance, AI is *extremely* well-suited to โ€œfill in my gapsโ€.

I refuse to use it on two fronts โ€“ I work im a highly technical strictly regulated industry and value my reputation too much to be wrong as often as AI is, and itโ€™s just so fucked on so many levels when viewed through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. https://sdgs.un.org/goals

@ana The most succinct summary of my fear of/problem with AI is: it's great for individuals and terrible for society. I've found that by conceding that they find it useful, they're also more willing to accept that there are problems that need to be addressed.

@ana so far I get the feeling a lot of people hope the bubble will kill AI.
If it does not, I guess we'll have the choice of accepting AI or fighting capitalism and sadly for everyone involved, that might be a hill I'm willing to die on.
Figuratively.
Proverbial hill.
Fighting capitalism to be clear.
