Aha, found a source for sugarcane (which I will plant, it is EXCELLENT for putting in the BBQ smoker).

"Caña" at a random hole in the wall local mercado . Price was $3.00 for a whole branch, although I got the gringo price of $4.00 lol. (snagged a burrito while i was there too, and tipped heavily, all of those markets around here are suffering greatly).

Well, let's see if this works. Stuck them all in one pot, and will transplant any that sprout. #sugarcane #gardening
@ai6yr caveat: I am not a plant person. it looks like bamboo which I have loads of in my yard. how hard can growing sugar cane be? would they sprout faster if you suspend the ends in water like the grade school project?
@ai6yr Cut them into lengths with one node in each. Soak for a couple of days. Put into dirt, node in air or dish of water until plant grows from node.
@Dero_10 @ai6yr I'm having a bamboo problem on my property and this gave me PTSD
@Nonya_Bidniss @Dero_10 @ai6yr I had a bamboo problem a few years ago (I didn't win, I moved), and I growled aloud when I saw the photo … then got happy because growing sugarcane is a cool project, as is supporting local businesses that can use our help
@coral @Nonya_Bidniss @Dero_10 Sugar cane is a weed in Hawaii, but it's not in Southern California (luckily). It's just way too dry here to spread!
@ai6yr @coral @Nonya_Bidniss I’m in Canada, greenhouse or inside with grow lights in winter, pot outside summer.
@Nonya_Bidniss @Dero_10 @ai6yr Don't overlook the fact that there are two kinds of bamboo. The ones with runners which can travel 50 feet in a season (or more) and think your basement is a fine place to sneak into and break the pipes to get water. Then there's the clumping kind. Very well behaved. Form clumps (you probably guessed), and can be controlled by knocking off any new shoots that come up on a wrong side of the plant.
@quixote @Dero_10 @ai6yr Oh I know. And around these parts we have the bad kind.
@Dero_10 Oooh, okay, I an also trythat.
