Not all free email is created equal πŸ‘‰ There are email providers that:

βœ… Are free

βœ… Are end-to-end encrypted by default

βœ… Do not collect your personal data

βœ… Do not spy on you

βœ… Do not serve ads

Find out how these email providers compare in our in-depth guide: https://tuta.com/blog/best-free-email-accounts

@Tutanota

Mailbox.org?

@u_urban @Tutanota, I guess in this specific case the confusion may come from a mismatch in Mastodon posts & actual blog posting times.

On Mastodon, this mail comparison image was posted an hour ago (2026-01-31) but the blog post was on 2026-01-27.

DeGoogle image (where Mailbox.org was mentioned) was posted on 2026-01-25 while the blog post was published on 2026-01-28. I'm actually lost how it's even possible  perhaps the blog post was edited

@u_urban, though I do agree it definitely would be fair to include Mailbox.org, since it's not a first time in was included in Tuta's deGoogle lists

@Tutanota, your visual info representation is easy to process and generally very useful but sometimes it lacks consistency, leaving you to wonder what was wrong with options left out

@Tutanota yeah hey @protonprivacy Why aren't you publishing your app on F-Droid?

@0_D @Tutanota @protonprivacy

My guess is because their Proton Mail App in Android depends on Google Play Services, I found out that the hard way, when I installed the app in GrapheneOS.

Which is totally against their "deGoogle" speech...
Seems they need to started deGoogling their app also.

And this dependency is not allowed by F-Droid.
Just my 2 cents.

@cajo @0_D You don't need an app store to even download it. I use Proton Mail on GrapheneOS and only use Obtainium for downloads, why do you think the apk is on their Github (which is linked in Download under Android).

@kanelbullar @0_D

Thanks, nice to know, but even the Github version is dependent on Google Play Services, which is not allowed by F-Droid. That was the question.

And BTW, @Tutanota works perfectly without issues in GrapheneOS, with no Google dependencies.

@0_D @Tutanota @protonprivacy f-droid will not accept anything not FOSS that they can build on their package server. I follow their newsgroup (lurk, lurk).
@0_D @Tutanota @protonprivacy they don't even have a linux client for most of their services. Absolute dealbreaker.

@0_D Just as a reminder, Proton doesn't monitor their Mastodon account anymore. They stopped in february 2025, saying "We’re consolidating our social media presence due to limited resources and no longer posting on Mastodon. Follow us on Reddit for the latest updates".

Limited resources for a company with 500 employees is laughable. Insterestingly, this happened after the whole Andy Yen debacle (congratulating Trump for Gail Slater nomination).

@Tutanota I really wish they redirected resources from this farcical marketing to product improvement
@Tutanota I would really appreciate if the matrix would be correct.
Proton has an apk for ProtonMail so no need for f-droid or other Stores.
Additionally, I can see my contacts in the mobile apps.
They are a direct competitor and these errors dont look good on you
@Tutanota one point is missing though: which one allow you to use your own mail client? It's not you...
So do not trust a (statistic) marketing plot you didn't made yourself.
@Tutanota Take a look at Zoho mail. It ain’t European, but at least not American.
@Tutanota There seems to be an error in the table with Posteo contacts sync. Posteo offers CardDAV to sync contacts.
@Tutanota Once you try the free version, I bet you'll like it so much, you'll sign up for a premium account. It took 2 months of using the free version before I was convinced to sign up. I've been with them for years. Honestly, not even sure how many years it's been at this point.
@Tutanota It would be nice if you included "Supports standard protocols (IMAP/SMTP) for free choice of mail client" :)

@Tutanota I use/used Mailfence/Posteo/Mailbox/Proton/Tuta in the "more private than gmail" sphere. Sadly, Mailfence, Posteo and Mailbox (even Fastmail) recycle adresses after you close your account (can take months up to a few years).

I'd like to keep using Tuta but notifications are unreliable, Seems like the push service used by Tuta is very sensitive to network instability (checked the app logs). In a rural area I missed notifications multiple times. If the mail is important it's bad.

@Tutanota Apart from that, the state of regular IMAP clients on mobile is bad. You basically have Fairemail or Thunderbird on Android, the rest is generally privacy invasive. Fairemail is a one man project that is quite complex to use (settings are a mess), and the dev threatened to quit multiple times. Thunderbird/K-9 is simpler but also missing quite a lot of features (email formating, send later, folder colors, locking the app with a pin or biometrics etc.).
@Tutanota Other random thoughts: I don't know why most email providers in the privacy sphere do not notify you when some security related events occur such as someone logging into your account. Only Proton does it all here. You're even notified if your custom domain settings have been modified in your Proton account.
