Many people in the UK do not know just how infested government and local government has become with the strategies of the US Department of Homeland Security. (Of course, the UK government also has its own long history of paranoia, prejudice and abuse.)

The Conservative government introduced "Verification Checks" which were carried out at local venues a few years ago (yay, e'en before #RishiSunak ).

This is one of the latest. It's library membership.

the HMRC also did (has done / is doing) large scale data harvesting but called it "recruitment"

this seems similar but it's from the people's favourite organisation, the NHS
