If you see an invitation to participate in a trans or genderqueer study sponsored by Northwestern University, steer clear. It's a rigged, unethical scheme to undermine access to care. Spread the word.

@raineyday Commentary in the Chicago Sun-Times last month on Nortwestern University:

"... the Northwestern bargain endangers academic freedom and institutional autonomy, subjecting the university to ongoing federal control.
...
Further, Northwestern insists the agreement makes no new policy regarding transgender community members. In fact, it bars gender-affirming care for minors and borrows its definition of 'sex' from an executive order that erases the existence of intersex, transgender and nonbinary persons. It appears to require the university maintain 'all-female' sports, locker rooms and shower facilities."

Northwestern caved in a rotten deal with Trump administration

The Trump administration extracted millions without proving discrimination. The agreement tramples academic freedom and privacy.

@raineyday Questions? What is rigged? And who is unethical? Peddling misinformation is also unethical

@tijgerdaemon account without any visible activity or followers is typically a troll

@raineyday

@oatmeal @raineyday I’m not particularly active on Mastodon simply because I don’t use it much. The majority of my clients and contacts are (sadly) on more popular (populist?) sites.

This page explains the controversy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid-onset_gender_dysphoria_controversy
If you take Dr Littman's stated positions (on her website) at face value, they may sound reasonable. But the linked article highlights the biases present in her work, and how that work is used to further anti-trans efforts in goverment and media.

Put simply: yes we should study all aspects of trans experiences, but that doesn't excuse fuelling alarmism that prevents proven effective medical care.

@matt @tijgerdaemon She is first and foremost a bad scientist who tries to make the data for her pre-conceived ideas.

"Put simply: yes we should study all aspects of trans experiences, but that doesn't excuse fuelling alarmism that prevents proven effective medical care."

I see you are trying to make a short, simple statement about researching ROGD.

But I feel the need to emphasize for other readers that the conceptual framework used in a research study can make it intrinsically destructive of the group being studied.

Eugenics science (a science at the time) was an example of this.

Collecting unverified reports of vaccine injuries and using the highly biased results to promote fear of vaccinations is another example.

Legitimate vs illegitimate approaches to research:

The Cochrane Review on Masking ignored decades of established physics and thoroughly tested air filtration engineering, demanded inappropriate kinds of experiments and was extrapolated by one of their lead researchers to "Masks don't work."

The Cass Review of healthcare ...

@matt

(Cass Review)
... for transgender childten took a very similar approach, rejecting over 700 highly relevant research studies and pretending that only one type of research has validity, which, to no one's surprise, let them make garbage conclusions.

The approach to a subject taken by scientists is always political. And sometimes illegitimate and deceitful.

Read the accumulated comments on this post and be careful about accusing others of peddling misinformation.

@tijgerdaemon @raineyday You could have just looked up J Michael Bailey on Wikipedia.
@raineyday
littmann of
rapid onset gender dyphoria fame

bailey also from
rogd but also autogynephilia fame as well as a shitton of other sketchy stuff
Rapid-onset gender dysphoria controversy - Wikipedia

"rapid-onset gender dysphoria" (ROGD)

Lisa Littman

Littman, a physician-researcher formerly at Brown University, published the seminal 2018 PLOS One paper on ROGD, surveying parents (recruited from sites skeptical of youth transitions) who reported their teens—mostly adolescent girls—suddenly declaring transgender identities amid friend groups, social media, and prior mental health issues.

The paper was corrected in 2019 over methodology critiques (e.g., biased sampling), but Littman defends it as exploratory, not anti-trans, and notes ROGD isn't a formal diagnosis or claim that no one benefits from transition.

She's faced doxxing, job loss threats, and activist backlash labeling her work "transphobic," yet continues research, including collaborations on larger parent surveys.

J. Michael Bailey

Bailey, a Northwestern University psychology professor, has decades of polarizing work on sex/gender, including his 2003 book The Man Who Would Be Queen, which argued some male-to-female transitions stem from autogynephilia (sexual arousal at the idea of being female); this led to protests, IRB probes (cleared), and death threats.

Bailey co-authored a 2023 Archives of Sexual Behavior paper with parent Suzanna Diaz on 1,655 ROGD cases, retracted later for consent issues (data from non-academic sources), which he calls ideological censorship despite disclosed flaws.

He promotes ROGD as explaining post-2010 surges in teen gender dysphoria referrals (especially females), tied to social contagion, and rejects activist demands to suppress "unwanted" findings.

@raineyday Just kinda curious, what is unethical or rigged about this? It is not obvious from the post itself
@raineyday kindly, edit this so it includes the salient points from the below comments on why these researchers aren't trustworthy, so this post can be a standalone object
