With Microsoft and Apple both embracing AI with too much enthusiasm, and Windows and macOS seeming to get worse and worse with usability issues, upsells, and bugs, it's contributing to a feeling in me that tech is in a very dark period.

While I've kept a Linux box around for testing cross-platform stuff for a while, I think that it's time to daily drive Linux for real, at least for a trial period. I'm more motivated now to find alternatives to some of the things that were giving me issues.

I've long used Keepass as my password manager. I used to store my database privately on Dropbox, then Google Drive when Dropbox limited how many devices you could use. However, either way, I could never find a good Linux client for those that synced as well as the official ones on Windows/macOS, so that was a pain point for me. Trying out Bitwarden now instead. So far, a nicer experience.

All of my development tools (editors, compilers, etc.) are available and work mostly as well (I can actually even run some legacy AS3/AIR/Flash stuff, but it's a bit less stable).

Finding some kind of image editor that I like may end up annoying me. I used Photoshop as a power user for many years, and Affinity Photo ended up being a good alternative when I discovered that. I may end up trying to run Affinity with Wine or something because I don't think I'll enjoy working with Gimp.

Forgot to mention the distro: Using Fedora Asahi Remix with KDE on an M1 Mac Mini.
@joshtynjala I've been using various distros as my daily driver (not at work) for around 10 years straight. Happy to help if you have any questions. I'm fine with Gimp myself, but takes some getting used to for sure. I heard some stuff recently about Affinity for Linux. here... https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/01/run-affinity-linux-ubuntu-appimage?v1 (should work beyond ubuntu)
Run Canva Affinity on Ubuntu using this Unofficial AppImage

Tired of fighting with Wine dependencies? A new unofficial AppImage provides a streamlined, self-contained way to get the Affinity suite running on Ubuntu.

OMG! Ubuntu
@bit101 Thanks! I had seen that some folks had gotten Affinity to work, but I haven't had a chance to dig into the details yet.
@joshtynjala I just installed it on my Manjaro laptop. Went fine and seems to work well. I'm not familiar with the app at all. But looks good.

@joshtynjala There's also some web-based alternatives like Photopea https://www.photopea.com/ and Graphite https://graphite.art/

PS: I have a special distaste for Gimp in my heart 😅
