@robloblaw @Rachelburch Grass might slow down the water, perhaps enough to prevent gullies from forming more than twice in a century, but the water will still be flowing over the surface, slowly but steadily taking soil particles with it. Swales will not just slow down the water but stop it and grow more trees. Trees will do a better job at infiltration, recharging the aquifer, and at holding the soil together. Swales could also fill dams that would extend the availability of water in times of drought.
A gentle granite hill is a landscape feature that can only exist because of erosion. Without intervention and given enough time the hill will eventually disappear, together with the soil lying on top.
