zand@Doridian They handed out a ton of codes to people who made an account just before release so that they could reserve usernames while a bunch of the long-term supporters didn't get a code.
I found out that my name was taken when checking after someone tried to sell me the name I used for Minecraft. I assume that squatters got a bunch of codes and just reserved names from a list of Minecraft accounts.
