Your annual reminder that when the poms defined their land-grab of NSW on this day in 1778 it only went as far as the 135E meridian and didn't include Australie-Occidentale (WA) because the French had already claimed it.

I will be marking this day by re-swearing my allegiance to King Louis XV

@Ex_spurt I am reminded of this Terry Pratchett quote:

It seemed to be a chronic disease. It was as if even the most intelligent person had this little blank spot in their heads where someone had written: "Kings. What a good idea." Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.

@abstractcode its definitely a design flaw. Even when you get rid of them people like to recreate them in the form of some other type of authoritarian leader
@Ex_spurt South Australia was still called New Holland until about 60 years later, when the South Australian Company established a free settlement where Adelaide stands today (after briefly camping on Kangaroo Island.)
Prior to that, the SA coast was frequented by whaling teams who set up stations on the coast for catching whales and processing whale oil for the local and British markets.

@Ex_spurt I believe this chap is the rightful king of Australie Occidentale:

Vive le Roi! :)
