I started looking into #meshtastic to solve a practical problem: giving my parents and in-laws, who happen to live in the same rural area, a way to text each other. Phone connectivity often fails them, so having an off-grid way to exchange quick messages would be great!

Despite the short distance, the two houses are separated by a dense, tall, (and wet) patch of rainforest. For a moment I thought it would be a no go. But I did an experiment with a T-Echo and a Heltec V4 and got a +4 dB SNR! 🎉

@py2toz Try meshcore instead, finding it is much better in Southern California, at least.
@py2toz Meshcore or reticulum will not make much difference with meshtastic when there are only two nodes on the network, but antenna, frequency and modulation chosen will. A pair of Yagis should give your 5-10dB more, considering that you only need to transmit in one direction.
