TFW you reread a book, and something you'd sort of glossed over before now stares you in the face, and the book is ruined. The Innkeeper Chronicles, by Ilona Andrews. One of the characters is a genocidal, deposed former tyrant, who ACTUALLY EATS PEOPLE! and the innkeeper is sheltering and protecting her because...the magical inn needs guests. And this innkeeper dares to hold herself as a moral authority! Possibly the most American thing ever. #books #bookstodon #ilonaandrews
@temporal_spider Help me connect the dots -- what is peculiarly *American* about this? It kind of reminds me of "Master of the House" in Les Misérables... or that fantasy (european?) trope of ancient magic/custom not letting you harm a guest at your house lest you be cursed...
@semitones I did rather abbreviate my point, didn't I? The USA has a long, disgusting history of propping up dictators and genocidal scum to accomplish US policy objectives. Supporting murderers for expedience sake. And yet we cling to the belief that we are the good guys.
@temporal_spider ah yeah that makes sense.
