This is a brave man, with a phone camera in his hand, moments before he is tackled and murdered.
@gleick He worked ICU at a VA hospital.
@gleick Call me crazy, but I don't think anyone could think that's a gun
@ZenHeathen @gleick We don’t even know if that gun on a car seat photographed by CBP belonged to the victim.
@gleick
First Good, now Pretti. Pretti and Good. 😢
It seems The Universe is trying to tell certain Americans something that is very clear to others… no matter how ā€˜good’ you are at telling porky pies (lies) & manipulating images (such as a penguin leading a hated politician into an icy wilderness), their names - Pretti and Good - tell their truth. 😢
@Su_G @gleick
I thought the exact same thing.
@Su_G @gleick
The Bad and the Ugly killed #Good and #Pretti.

@gleick Reminder, you can easily and quickly mute and block trolls on this or any thread.

Don't feed the troll. That's what they are here for. Peace.

@VisualStuart @gleick

Yup. Reported and blocked. Scum like that deserves no attention. I suggest everyone else report him too.

@gleick

What happened to Alex's phone?

@gleick They were obviously very aware that he was holding a phone. Too bad they probably have the phone now.

Something people should consider if filming these thugs is to livestream to YouTube or something that will capture video so it’s available for others to view & backup.

@gleick Unlike the murderous thug in the mask.
@gleick May God bless this man, and may justice never be delayed
@gleick A kind reminder that during WW2, the deportations were not only organised by the Nazi's/German, but also by government police. The few little deeds that saved a small amount of people were later remembered as heroic. (1/2)
@gleick This was a normal man, standing up against what he sees as a tyrannical government. The same type of government that is referenced to when debates are held about the 2nd amendment. This incident however shows that the 2nd amendment will never protect Americans. It's only going to be used as an excuse to act mire violently (2/2)
@pwdebruyne @gleick The whole idea that the 2nd amendment is meant to protect against tyrants is a lie. America will not be whole until the Slave Patrol Amendment is gone.

@gleick

I can't prove it but I think they killed him because he made them feel small.

You know, by really doing all of those things we like to say "makes a man a real man"

Stepping up to protect smaller people from the bullies. With calm with honor. Like at his job. Never losing his cool while doing it.

It was an inverted mirror for these little wannabes in all of their mismatched gear looking like boys playing "army" ...

His presence set them off.

@gleick

There are a lot of men who will say "I can't stand it when I see a man hit a woman." They will brag be proud of it. But, then there are the people who really feel this way. Who act accordingly. (often not the same people)

They can't stand to see a bully. A bunch gear-balls knocking people smaller than them over. And they respond. A controlled de-escalating response. To step in the way.

Hit me instead. I'm filming you. I'm calm. Leave them alone. A real hero.

@gleick

My aunt used to tell my cousin who was, like everyone in our family, a huge nerd, but he was also physically huge. Taller than all of us. Just an imposing figure and a Black Man... she told him to be careful.

"Just seeing a man like you can make some of these cops angry. You need to understand that."

I guess it happens to white men too.

And this government tells them "don't worry, no consequence, express your inner emotions."

@gleick

TBH when a guy says "I can't stand it when I see a man hit a woman." it's a little red flag for me. The men I know who have said that have always tuned out to be people with little respect for women, or boundaries or... other people.

But maybe my experiences are skewed.

@futurebird

It shouldn't be a problem, but sometimes it is.

One of my friends recently saw a bloke beating a woman outside a cinema. He pulled over, and rushed over and twatted the bloke. The girl then had my friend charged with assault on her boyfriend, because 'we were just arguing'. Sheesh.

@gleick

@futurebird @gleick I think I know what you mean. It's the kind of statement that shows more concern for a gender hierarchy than for the general principle of nonviolence. (personally I can't stand when I see people hit each other in anger, period)
@futurebird @gleick same, tbh. I’ve heard it said in a way that implies ā€œyou should be able to control women without violenceā€ and I’m like okay but maybe control and coercion is also violent and you don’t get a cookie for not actually hitting her
@futurebird @gleick I don’t think it’s skewed. The men who say things like that mean they should be able to control ā€œtheir womenā€ without hitting them. It’s about the perceived violence of striking rather than the real violence of control.

@futurebird
There’s also a class of people who talk a big game but play a small one. People who brag about themselves… and talk an awful lot… but don’t walk any of the talk. 😐

@gleick

@futurebird @gleick

When someone does something so needless and vicious, the simplest explanation that fits the facts is they wanted to do it.

ICE have been recruiting people who want to be cruel, who want to dominate and bully, and yes, want an excuse and an opportunity to kill.

Seeing one of their number get away with it and even be praised for it and shielded from consequences has emboldened some of them to look for opportunities with even thinner excuses to do the same.

@futurebird I think you're exactly right. And I think it was the same with Jonathan Ross’s murder of RenĆ©e Good. When she said, ā€œThat's fine, dude, I’m not mad at you,ā€ it made him feel small. It showed him that she was brave and he was ineffectual. He couldn't bear it.

@futurebird @gleick

We are pain and what cures pain, both. We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours. I want to hold you close like a lute, so that we can cry out with loving. Would you rather throw stones at a mirror? I am your mirror and here are the stones.

—Rumi, probably

@futurebird @gleick

I think you are spot on. And I wish more people would see this.

And like with bullies, there seems to be strong incentive to not see them. "If there's an unhinged death squad, and I do nothing, what does this say about me?". So there's a strong incentive to seek explanations and make excuses.

Conservative white men want to believe in a general fairness of the world and society, because that's where their status stems from.
