After having to head out for an extra appointment yesterday and encountering a lot more businesses (and a few roads!) with uncleared parking areas that had become deep, sticky slush I was reminded of the now-unfashionable film staple of deadly danger and unpredictable outcomes: #quicksand.

If there isn't already a word for this sort of deep, sucking slush that can easily trap vehicles, perhaps 'quickslush' is an appropriate descriptor? 🤔

The bike community calls it "snirt"

@Daveography

Oooooh! I LOVE snirt! ❤️❤️❤️

Is #snirt a #yegBike term or is it used more broadly among bike folks?

(As long as cars exist, I really really really want the world to adopt the #Edmonton word #parkade instead of the needlessly long and boring #ParkingStructure 😛).

@likelyjanlukas @Daveography

I hadn't heard "snirt" till I came here - heard it called "brown sugar" or "cornmeal".

FWIW "parkade" spans at least BC to Saskatchewan. That covers basically every anglophone place I've lived or spent much time in, so I hadn't realized it was a regionalism before.

@dragonfrog @likelyjanlukas

I'm not sure how widespread it is, now that you mention it. Pretty sure I've seen it used by folks in other regions but it could be they've picked it up from us. 🤔

@Daveography @dragonfrog

I apologise that I don't have a source to cite handy but I have understood parkade to be an Edmonton-coined word for most of my life (and I'm sure I've run across that in writing somewhere more than once).

Regardless, it is a FAB word and I'm delighted to hear it has spread beyond our city! ❤️

@likelyjanlukas @Daveography @dragonfrog I mean if there's two things we love in this city, it's parking and malls, so any term about either of those things coming from here is very believable.
