Bluesky: Funded by crypto VCs. Protects Trump/ICE. Controlled by shareholders.

Also Bluesky users: "wHy iS mAstOdOn So bAd??"

Brother, you're literally on a corporate surveillance tool criticizing actual freedom.

The fediverse won everywhere that matters.

@dansup People often neglect freedom for shiny UIs. Fediverse isn't perfect, but at least the control stays with us.

@rgo
In my opinion, Mastodon (I don't know any other platforms in the Fediverse) is a perfect alternative. I don't miss anything that other platforms would offer me. Except hate speech, but I can live without that. 😅
Is everything perfect here? No. But is there such a thing as a perfect platform? The alternatives also have disadvantages, even though you give up control and pay with your data.

@dansup

@DopaScout @rgo I still am on the X for guess what: football updates and some pages and news updates. I hope I'd just get out of there but I have deleted my previous accounts to again making a new one after a while.
@DopaScout @rgo @dansup My guess is that most people prefer platforms because of Algorithms and instant gratification. It is so, so difficult to grow an audience on Mastodon, to get likes, and to be seen because you have to engage and put effort into it. This doesn't run on autopilot.
I like it here but I can see why people go elsewhere. Also, a lot of entrepreneurs and artists do their marketing on mainstream social media which is incredibly difficult already.
@rgo @dansup Fedi has a lot of problems, no doubt, but unlike alternatives participants have the power to be part of solving them. We don't have to wait on a corporate overlord to decide something is important.
@rgo @dansup Bluesky's UI looks dated and the app is super slow and stuttery. Mastodon looks modern, its official app looks beautiful, it's fast AND you can customize everything if you wish. The only thing Bsky has that Mastodon and Fedi in general do not is algorithms and thousands of likes on bad content because of it. In the beginning where everyone from Twitter migrated to Bsky, it wasn't even easy to get an account. So even that isn't a selling point of Bsky. It was just hyped and "where everyone else goes" so people went along without caring about privacy or control.
@dansup Yes, so right! Fediverse is the way. It's just so hard to communicate the reasons why to the general public.
@dansup true story: I was on it for a week and did a private message making fun of trump and his goons. within seconds, private messages were stripped from me "out of respect for people involved."
@dansup Do you have proof that they protext Trump and ICE?
@dansup Apparently the founder also supported a bunch of transphobe politicians...

@dansup Buuut the founder left the company and the current CEO may be fine.

Still would not trust them, it being a public company. Cringe.

@dansup mastodon is great so far, but there is a learning curve for new users.

@CathyBikesBook @dansup There is a learning curve always for everything. I personally don’t see what’s so “shiny” about bluesky it’s a UI clone of Twitter so if you like that you have frontends on fedi to choose from that look pretty much the same.

I don’t get why people who I think are smart thought it’s a good idea to move from one corporate social network to the other one. As if things would be any better. I would understand it 15 years ago when community driven alternatives were much more difficult. But now things are at least same as corporate stuff and in most cases better. No ads, no corporate bullshit marketing no algorythms. I think at this point it should be no brainer.

@muppeth I never got on Bkuesky, because when it first came out, it was invite only. Told me all I needed to know right then. I do believe people should be on whatever social media website they choose and it's better to be on multiple different sites than to only be on one. There are plenty of folks who aren't on any social media sites at all, so thats always an option too

@dansup 90% of what I've heard people complain about Mastodon for is literally just "pick instance? TOO HARD!"

The other 10% has been people decrying the existence of reply guys, as if that isn't a problem on literally every social media platform.

@dansup And the vast majority of the userbase there is just liberals who care more about attacking the left than fighting the far-right. It's insufferable.

Also the moderation there is blatantly transphobic and anti-Palestine.

@dansup
Bluesky is for glampers.

@dansup
Right? Bsky had the same guy that founded Twitter and sold it to Elon. Why would i go there?

On the other hand, it keeps a lot of ~grifters~ influencers out, so it is kind of a win.
