'i learn so much by using an LLM' sure thing, just as anyone who ever 'learned' programming from a book while not bothering to type out a single line of code.
@q3k you wound my 12yo soul
@q3k ok but it has done well to remind me "hey this single standard lib function does what youre trying to do manually" several times.
@Rin3d skill issue

@q3k no I'm just a forgetful dumbass lol

But tbh it's most helpful just being a more powerful context aware predictive autocomplete (go figure). Let's me keep thinking on logic rather than syntax yknow?

@Rin3d i too am a forgetful dumbass

Remembering to look up (std) library docs, knowing how to read them fast, recognizing that what you're doing might be already done for you - that's also a skill! And like any other skill, use it or lose it. The more you defer to the LLM, the worse you'll be off without it.

@q3k @Rin3d It's important to keep in mind that currently these companies are losing money on genAI. If they want to become financially sustainable (they don't give a shit about the more important kind of sustainability) then they will have to increase prices by a lot.
When I ask myself whether I want to grow dependent on the infrastructure of these few megacorps, even if I was a purely selfish asshole who didn't give a shit about the harms these companies are doing to others (btw any money you give to them goes to Trump), I will still answer "no", because they are never going to provide enough value to justify such a dependence.
@csepp @q3k @Rin3d what is your take on AI accelerationism? Using it for dumb shit (without relying on it) burns them VC money, so we can be over with the hype faster? Not sure how serious this suggestion is but logically it follows?
@uint8_t @csepp @Rin3d I believe the signal of using/paying for the model is more valuable for the companies than whatever money I can burn in return. They know they're loosing money, in fact burning more money than their competitors (ie. having more regular users) is a sign of success for their investors.
@uint8_t @csepp @Rin3d More broadly: the market is irrational - always has been and always will be. Trying to apply logic to it is a futile endeavor.
@q3k @uint8_t @csepp @Rin3d

That's how the current market works. This market isn't sustainable long term
@q3k can confirm, I didn't learn shit until I had the compiler yell at me about all the syntax errors

@q3k Ah, all the things I didn't learn because I didn't use GenAI for learning!

I didn't learn that Carrot from Pepper & Carrot is a black cat, I didn't learn that the bottom side of a Space Shuttle orbiter is white, I didn't learn that killall kills processes by name in Solaris.

And I didn't not learn more because I didn't really try to play more with such LLMs.
