"Following the murder of Renee Good, the regime has ordered another 1,000 gestapo forces to join the 2,000 forces already in Minneapolis. The goal is to terrorize Blue states and Blue cities and invoke martial law. We’ve seen this authoritarian playbook throughout history in other countries. It’s shameful this is what is happening in the United States."

"They’re attempting to control a wildfire by setting more fires. To this I say: Let them keep misreading the room. Let them believe their own delusional fantasies. The second they overreach, which they will, they’ll find out exactly how ungovernable this country really is when it’s pushed past the line."

These Dumb Bastards Actually Think They Can Pull This Off

I’m an incredibly cynical person by nature, but I’ll say without hesitation that I’m actually optimistic.

"The recent shooting in Minneapolis is so deeply disturbing, not only because a woman was killed, but also because after she was shot, a physician on the scene was prevented by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from rendering aid.

As a trauma surgeon, I find that fact chilling."

I'm a surgeon – and I've been shot. ICE denying Renee Good aid is inhumane.

I do not know if Renee Nicole Good could have been saved; no one can say with certainty. But she should have been given every possible chance.

"In medicine, we do not ask who someone is before we treat them. We do not ask where they are from, what they believe or whether they are "deserving." We treat them because they are injured. Full stop.

This principle is not sentimental idealism; it is the ethical foundation of emergency medicine, trauma care and humanitarian response across the world.… What happened in Minneapolis represents a rupture of that shared ethic."

"A society is judged not only by how it enforces its laws, but also by whether it upholds its most basic obligations in moments of crisis. If we lose the commitment to treat the injured, regardless of who they are, we lose something essential. And once lost, it will not be easy to reclaim."

@wdlindsy Implying that ICE is enforcing law. That's a pernicious frame, and easy to slump into, but it just ain't so no matter how much it's repeated.
@vivtek I don't think that's the implication Sakran wants to leave readers with. I think he's saying, in fact, that ICE does exactly the opposite.

@wdlindsy It's clearly not the implication he wants to leave the reader with, and it's tangential to what he *does* (which is that regardless of other context, a society at least treats the injured). I'm not even expecting him to choose his words differently - that would, after all, obscure his actual point.

I'm just trying to be more aware of how word choice says things without explicitly saying things. This is a really clear case.
