Something I am wondering about with Unstream is whether it should just be totally free / donationware, or whether the “upgrade” for list saving and other eventual features is worth keeping. I am inspired by the interest here and the ethos of #faircamp and @mirlo mostly, and I’m not looking to build a real saas business, just some good tiny tools. Open to opinions here!

Unstream - Find Music on Alternative Platforms

Find what's playing on alternative platforms, directly support the artists you love, and move off streaming.

I like your app. 2 thoughts: 1) Maybe mention somewhere on the start page that this works only on non-mobile devices because both Apple + Google prevent digital sales of music due to their 30% platform tax. 2) It's wild that alternative download platforms like Subvert, Mirlo et al don't offer label accounts. Independent labels like my own invest in artists and connect them with audiences they would not reach otherwise. Label catalogs are a great way to discover new music too.

@rob thanks!
Re: 1 you can use this on mobile in the web browser, it even includes a shortcut for using more dynamically on iOS. I’d like to explore an android solution someday

Re: 2, what do you have in mind here? Something like a label directory to also explore? Label info for the artist if relevant? Something else?

Re 1: Sorry I didn't meant your service, I meant the actual process of buying music: No mobile app does offer this atm not even Amazon music, it's only possible in a web browser (which causes different problems such as easy file management).

Re 2: I would not ask for such feature for your service although it's intriguing but a whole different an manual labor intensive beast.

It was a rather broad observation when it comes to selling music. PS: I discovered Qobuz through Unstream. :) kudos
@rob ok cool, yeah very familiar with this 1st problem. I’ve found myself listening to more music in browser lately because of this frustrating reality 🥴
It's important to raise awareness about the mobile monopoly situation in regards to digital music sales and your service does that indirectly very well. The former owner of Bandcamp, Epic Games filed a lawsuit about it, when they realised they couldn't challenge the status quo they sold Bandcamp. @rob yep, I’m quite aware. I also suspect most people are used to their native player of choice and don’t care/think much about going outside it. It’s extremely difficult to argue against convenience to the average person. This is why I haven’t invested in mobile apps yet - I don’t think this app is necessarily for that audience outside of a fun curiosity.
I will write a blog post about Unstream and once again point out the systemic problem that this reveals—but which can only be changed through regulation (most unlikely).

@rob @kidlightbulbs Hi! Both Mirlo (and Jam who are also listed on there) support label accounts. 🐦‍⬛

Introducing Label Pages

Introducing Label Pages
Thank you for the info. I need to contact both platforms on professional requirements like release based payment (an artist can have different releases on different labels which may require different shares) and international tax collection. From what I gather from their FAQs these requirements are not met yet, maybe they work on it.

@rob You can allocate who payments go to per release on Mirlo (have attached a screenshot) and there's a global tax compliance thing through Stripe. You're right though, worth adding to the FAQ.

Tagging @jamcoop too, who will be able to give an overview of their label setup.

@RobertaFidora @rob thanks Roberta. We don't currently support automatically splitting between artist and label, but various elements of sales tax are handled. Happy to enable label support on your account, Rob, if you'd like to give it a try.
Thank you Jam Coop, I'll look into this closer.
Thank you Roberta for the info, I will look into it further.
