I have sought out the Finnish winter, and had a nice walkies in -26C with a wind chill of about -30C! It was reasonably nice, only bothered by not seeing shit with the glasses freezing over and it being quite dark already. 😂

"What's that behind you, Sini?"
Oh, just some wind damages from the recent blizzards. Somebody clearly put a bunch of them in a pile and left it, it's about twice my height in reality. 😄
It was definitely mittens over gloves weather and my feet were not warm, but other than that quite refreshing. Good walkies!
Ooo, it used to get that cold here sometimes! I remember the skin on my forehead, the only exposed skin, getting weirdly stiff ;-)
@daria That's just Normal Winter!
But we've also had Cold Winter recently, which has been -29C and colder, and it dropped to -41,1C in one city in Lapland. Those temperatures, those are too cold. Anything colder than -30C can go fuck itself, that's no longer reasonable
@sinituulia and here I was talking with people about the fact that it took some effort to get outside in the evening with temperatures between -5°C and 0°C :D
I don't mind them, but I admit that the idea of -20something°C and less scares me :D
@sinituulia true!
at -20°C I'd be “this is scary, can a native please check that what I'm wearing is correct and I'm not doing something stupid” (I think I know most of the theory, but yeah, that's just the *theory*)
at 40°C nope, I'm not going to a place where they get such temperatures, humans are not made to survive that.
@valhalla On either end of the thermometer 40 Celsius is too much!
I remember going to school in a miniskirt, nylon stockings, knee high boots and a long coat when it was -20C, often without a hat, with just a shawl wrapped around my head or my hood up. This is unwise, and I have no idea how I never once got frostbite, and absolutely would never ever do that again. 🙃 Nah, it's layers upon layers for me now, my nervous system does not enjoy lower body temperatures! But -20C is not really that bad, it kind of ramps up on a curve from there though... -26 is a different animal from -28 etc.
@valhalla @sinituulia
Probably! Because wetness somehow finds a way to creep in all of your layers to the bone.
But also I absolutely can't imagine dry zero 🤣
@sinituulia @laumapret to be fair, our dry zero degree weather also tends to be pretty dark: the typical day would look like:
* clear sky
* some wind (or a lot of wind)
* air that smells clean (as long as you're not too inside a town :) )
* a warm sun that brings the daytime temperature up to maybe even 10°C, but feels even warmer when in the sun
* as soon as the sun sets, temperatures drop to around 0°C, and then go down into the -5°C-ish during the night
rinse and repeat until the weather conditions change :)
the days when the sky is cloudy tend to be on average warmer, with temperatures between 1-2°C and 5°C through the day and night, and are more miserable.
@valhalla @sinituulia I’ve been having a hard time of late, because Delhi winter’s got the temperatures plummeting to the single (positive) digits…but then I remember how cold it gets in other places, and am reminded of the times when would I chide people who said that >35°C is too hot for them 😅
Temperatures of up to 45°C have become common in peak Delhi summers in the past decade. It’s not difficult to survive it…you stay indoors as far as possible, and keep the doors closed. Outside, you stick to the shade - trees, buildings, anything - like your life depends on it. And the usual…hydration, clothing, et al.
But it’s not fun, and I too would rather deal with extreme cold than extreme heat, for the same reasons given by Ms. Tuulia 🙂
@sinituulia
I bought that when I was in high school.
Thanks for making me feel old! 👴
