Signal massively downloaded amid rising tensions, number one in Denmark - AboutSignal.com

Signal most popular communication app in Google Play Store Denmark. People are looking for a safer alternative to WhatsApp.

@aboutsignal Signal relying on USA servers, maintained by an USA foundation, presided over by an USA resident. Yeah I guess?

I still like and use Signal, but how do you plan to operate in a fascist country?

Signal’s President on using AWS: The real problem is infrastructure monopoly

When AWS suffered a major outage, many were surprised to learn that Signal relies on Amazon’s cloud. Signal’s president Meredith Whittaker explains why that surprise reveals a deeper misunderstanding of how today’s internet actually works.

AboutSignal

@dallo @aboutsignal

If that is your threat model, you should be much more worried.

The internet at large is US tech.

Most content is behind CDNs from the US. Even some of the fediverse. Even some of the European Commission servers. Even some of your government services.

Beyond CDNs, all browsers are from the US.

Beyond browsers, the entirety of DNS, PKI, etc., is controlled by the US.

Banks depend entirely on the US. Even the ECB.

We are entirely US owned.

Time to wake up, maybe?

@7heo
Yes I know. I worried. A lot. That's why I posted.

@aboutsignal

@dallo Funfact: Some days ago I recommended in my local association of the SPD to use stashcat instead of Signal, because it is US-tech.
@dallo @aboutsignal that's what I was thinking 🤔 why don't we use @threemaapp instead? An European solution, with servers in Europe and everything between our borders

@petaqui Threema's server is proprietary – so we can't really know what happens on it. Signal's server on the other hand is open source and AGPL-3.0 licenced.

If you want something that is open source and non-US you could look at the @matrix protocol which is maintained by an UK based Foundation and self-hostable like many Fediverse services/projects.

@gelbphoenix @petaqui @matrix

I personally recommend SimpleX. Like Matrix, it’s European, free, open source, decentralised, federated, can be run on your own servers. What’s better than Matrix: No user ID’s, better encryption implementation.

Here’s a handy comparison of the most popular E2EE protocols:

Comparison of Instant Messengers

Comparison of Instant Messengers

@aboutsignal
- Proprietary closed server instance
- Centralized
- On US servers
- Through US servers services
- Under US laws
- Still w/o user-owned private key(s) ?
- Still w/o encrypted contacts list ?
- Still w/o encrypted exchange history ?

What could go wrong ?

Matrix, the open protocol for secure decentralised communications

@TehAppKiller @aboutsignal

Cool. Thanks for adding useful information.

@jztusk @TehAppKiller @aboutsignal yes matrix 👍
Also @delta (open source) and Olvid https://olvid.io/en/ (French)
Olvid - Home

Olvid - Private messaging for everyone.

@TehAppKiller @aboutsignal this is not true. Signal's server is open source. Signal does not control user encryption keys. Signal does not store user contacts. Signal backups are encrypted.
@aboutsignal Every European should do the same. While our leaders are constrained by dependence on the US, we as citizens have the freedom to take action.
@aboutsignal

Hopefully, more and more people in Europe will switch away from the fascist tech bros from the USA.

@aboutsignal Trump wants “privacy for me, but not for thee”

Session seems a more robust solution:

https://getsession.org/

Our family immediately left WhatsApp for Signal in January 2025, based on the US election and the 51st state threats. Now I am thinking Signal wasn't the best choice due to it's dependency on US infrastructure...

Thoughts?

Session | Send Messages, Not Metadata. | Private Messenger

Session is a private messenger that aims to remove any chance of metadata collection by routing all messages through an onion routing network.

Session

@alexblock

I have been using, am happy with and can highly recommend SimpleX:

https://simplex.chat

It's not as polished and is a bit more technical, but for me the extra effort was worth it.

Another issue with Signal--apart from using AWS and Google servers and being US based--is the fact that you need a mobile number and a smartphone. If you don't log in for a while with an iOS or Android app, your Signal account is deleted. I learned it the hard way. Thus, I set up SimpleX, informed my family and friends and did not look back.

Why we are building SimpleX Network

A network with no accounts, no identities, and no way to know who you are.

@aboutsignal thanks for reminding me to download Signal.
Strange allmost all are downloading random apps. Xmpp is the best solution. Host your own server or you have multiple servers In Europe too. No need do rely on anything single service

@aboutsignal

Signal is American, centralized, and requires a phone number. Use Session instead.

@aboutsignal @jw Canada should do the same...
@aboutsignal I wish #Signal didn't rely on US tech to function. The US-EAST-1 outage showed a weak point in the communication/messaging tool.
@aboutsignal
Great!
Everyone, next do open office or other Microsoft alternatives.
