Best distillation from @doubletap today's episode, "there are 2 issues, that combined will harm the future of #braille ... declining numbers of #blind people using Braille reading Braille and being taught Braille and a high cost of technology combined.".
Not an opinion of course, The NFB’s “Braille Literacy Crisis in America” report states that fewer than 10% of the 1.3 million legally blind people in the US are braille readers and only about 10% of blind children are learning braille.
@doubletap @Woody pointed to the fact that the doubletap folks need and edit and later retracted, an alternative route to that would be creating a critical episode charitably analysing where double tap may have a point and where there are missing the mark. or, more courageous step would be to come to the show directly and address them head on. silencing another would just quiet the discussion.
@doubletap @Woody from what I've checked, the stat that double tap drew on from NFB may be from 2009, and I wonder if we have recent studies or reports on this glaring issues.
@doubletap @Woody another under-appreciate factor in Braille adoption is most people who are going Blind later in life much comfortable in adopting to screen reader use, and if much needed labelling simple Braille signs. It's not so much on raeding or writing, love to hear counterpoints.
@doubletap @Woody To hear much more points on Braille literacy support from @doubletap listen to the episodes of them covering the #WorldBrailleDay 2025
