Are we 1940s Germany? - Lemmy Today

We have Nazis and Nazi-lite -> MAGA We have brown shirts -> ICE. We are blaming immigrants and believing white people are somehow superior. Now we just invaded a country, and say we will invade others. What’s happening here… It feels strange. Is anyone else seeing this?

You’re 1933 Germany. In 1940, Germany was already in the middle of a world war. Have fun with the reprise of the 1936 Berlin olympics (FIFA worldcup).
Our only hope is that trump is old, senile and having mini-strokes. Hitler was much younger.
Not much of a hope. Trump isn’t exactly the brain behind MAGA, and since the elections in the US aren’t all that free anymore anyway it won’t be that difficult to replace him. Considering how erratic Trump is, I don’t think the replacement will be an improvement.

Drugs like meth. Which is why he had more energy.

Can we get trump some meth?

Do you want Trump to have more energy?
Well I do want him to have a crippling meth addiction. So it’s a toss up.

The way I see it, his heart is already bogged down by decades of hamberders (they’ve already admitted he has circulation issues). Meth just might be the push he needs.

I say put the Oompah Loompah on speed, see what happens.

He is their charm to his base, there is no one else to replace him right now. Not to say that they couldn’t come up with someone later, but I don’t see anyone that could right now.
Do you really think their voters would abandon them in sufficient numbers to actually matter? I got the impression that a lot of them already think that he’s a dick, they just support “his” policies (e.g. he never made much of an effort to make himself look like a devout christian, despite his decidedly christofascist policies that were obviously popular with evangelicals). And considering all the gerrymandering, voter suppression and the outright election fraud that Trump bragged about (which happened while a Democrat was president), they’d have to abandon the GOP in truly massive numbers.
A lot of his base just lost their healthcare and they have no jobs or money. Government jobs are a social program with extra steps and less of the shitty rep. Guess who just lost a lot of their funding and were fired? There are going to be serious repercussions this time.

Those voters won’t leave the GOP, but come election day they’ll stay home for whoever replaces Trump. Consider, if Vance steps in, he gets all the blame, for all the things, overnight.

Ever seen a cult leader successfully replaced?

Every time someone says something like that I really feel we need to remind people that like a year and a half ago these morons are walking around with cups of JD Vance cum. Proudly. The bar is so much lower than you think it is. They’ll latch on to who’s ever handed to them.
This has been growing for Decades. Not years, not a decade, but more than half a century at least. Trump is just the latest in a long line of populist conservatives leading the charge against sanity.
People who rejected that comparison forgot that Hitler didn’t start as 1945 Hitler. And Trump is well on his way to become that version.

Except Trump can’t live that long. A dozen+ doctors have posted articles and videos lining out how he clearly has frontotemporal dementia. God knows what heart and other issues he has, but even with the best of luck and care, it won’t be long until he can’t be in front of cameras.

That last is just my opinion. But to my mind he really started to sundown around 2021-2020. At this point, he’s radically worse than just 2-3 years back.

True, but oh my god, look at his admin. No matter what happens in the next election, one of them will pick up. I fear Miller will simply eat the others. Or at least bite their heads off.

I’m afraid most of the administration are fools put up for us to rage and clown on. For example, can you imagine the real powers behind the throne agreeing that Pete Hegseth was a great choice for SecDef? He’s a handsome, drunk, fratboy with a military record and Fox News face recognition. Doesn’t matter a whit if he’s a twit. Perfect!

You’re right, Miller may be the real puppeteer. Notice how he keeps as low-key as possible? Sure, he’s says some stupid shit, but he’s in the background against the louder idiots.

But could Hermann Göring have slid into Hitler’s spot? That’s not a facile Nazi comparison. Dead cult leader -> implosion -> dead cult. They have to grasp total control before Trump can’t stand up and speak.

He can barely do so now, not joking. Watch him in a scheduled event his handlers can’t avoid, like the meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister. Trump was not present, having a “bad” day as they say in senior care.

Then JD attempts to step up

Let him! The second the cult leader is dead or displaced, Vance takes all the blame for everything Trump supporters are seething about. The game is to speed run Project 2025, grab the levers of power permanently before Trump literally can’t stand up without drooling.

Can you imagine the backstabbing, Bulgarian clusterfuck that would go down if Trump dropped dead tonight?! These folks are in a fucking hurry.

Think we’re at 1935 now.
You forgot the failing economy and increasing international isolation.
And the appeasement attempts by most European countries.
Also the sending of immigrants to torture prisons.
I think there was a LOT more popular support in Nazi Germany than there is for Trump
The Nazis got like 30% in the last free election. IDK how high the voter participation was, though.
IIRC voting was compulsory, and they had about 43% of their version of Congress. The rest of the parties filled out the remaining seats, something like 6 other parties consisted of 57% of their Congress. Hitler didn’t win with a majority vote either.
The parents of boomers would be aghast at what their children have been up to.

They didn’t really raise them…

Like, boomers didn’t become boomers out of nowhere. The ones who had fathers who fought nazis, likely didn’t have a father come back from the war. And when they did it was a vet (justifiably) shell shocked with zero access to anything resembling mental healthcare.

Good and bad generations are created by the ones before them. We need to learn this lesson so we can stop having little shits running around screeching trump slogans in 6th grade.

Raising competent generations takes effort, or else no one would be the effort in.

We didn’t put the effort in as a society with Gen alpha, now they’re all little shits and if we don’t fix them we’re gonna have to live with them the rest of our lives.

MAGAs are all ages.

You’re not wrong. But make no mistake, what is happening now mostly began and (hopefully) ends with the Boomer generation. They have failed the United States in so very many ways. They constantly blame others for their own failings. They can’t even define the word “introspection.” They would rather watch the world burn than let anyone, who they are not directly related to, prosper.

Like most people who follow blatant nonsense, younger generations in the US were indoctrinated from birth into the backwards thinking that leads to MAGA even becoming a thing. It’s no different than being indoctrinated into religion. It’s brainwashing disguised as child rearing.

Not all Boomers are this way. But in my admittedly small sample size, the vast majority that I’ve ever met, including those in my own family, are. And the craziest thing of it all – they think they’re right and righteous. And that’s what makes them dangerous.

It’s not a generation war, but a class war. You’re playing the wrong game.
They’re not mutually exclusive.
There are many many shitty people in every generation. Yes, they are mutually exclusive. Kirk was crap and now his wife is, Fuentes is a POS and Tate is the ultimate POS. There are no generation rules. Stop distracting from the class war.
I will call out bullshit everywhere it is, as I please. Thanks. If it’s a distraction to you, that’s your problem. Good bye.
Blame Bernie Sanders. He’s a boomer.
“Not all Boomers are this way”…I could have sworn I read that some where…
Unfortunately, yes.

The parents of boomers are sometimes just Nazis

No you’re America.

The Germans in 1940 didn’t have the lens of history to view the events through, they couldn’t necessarily have predicted the path they were on.

America in 2026? Everyone with working senses warned you loud and clear for years that this is exactly what happens if he ended up in the white house again instead of prison.

Most of you didn’t listen.

The fascists even published the plan in black and white before the election

It was bafflingly also largely dismissed

America is much worse now because you all know where this train ends and you’re all letting the driver get on with it

Come now, let’s not pretend that Hitler and the Nazis invented authoritarianism. Saying they didn’t have the lens or history to learn from is a little dismissive of two thousands years of written history.

Fair observation, but conversely, this particular kind of populism very much started with the 20th century fascists, it’s uncanny how similarly it’s going now.

Especially in terms of what people would be taught and expected to know about; I think you’d struggle to find anyone in the developed world who doesn’t know at least the basics about WW2.

Authoritarianism worked fairly well for a lot of states, though; it was democracy that had to prove its worth in the 1930s and it wasn’t really working for Germany at the time (because of extreme political polarization and a constitution that wasn’t equipped to deal with that kind of thing). The trouble with the Nazis (from their own perspective) was that they bit off a lot more than they could chew when they started the war.

Saying they didn’t have the lens or history to learn from is a little dismissiv

Especially when it was publicly affirmed that they took their inspiration, in part, from the genocidal policies the US employed to destroy the indigenous people here. (And, I’d add, if you’re not aware of just how euphemistic the term ‘reservation’ is, you should read up on how the US destroyed the indigenous people.)

they couldn’t necessarily have predicted the path they were on.

Yeah. If only Hitler had written down what he was up to. Like, in a book or something.

No, everything including literally Hitler is less bad than America. Now excuse me while I enjoy my 6 weeks of paid vacation time by pushing refugee boats back into the sea. /s

Is anyone else seeing this?

Everyone with any kind of voice has been screaming at the top of their lungs that this was happening ever since the aftermath of 9/11. Maybe earlier.

Same as with Hitler though, did you know he was imprisoned for an attempted coup in 1920s? That’s where he wrote “Mein Kampf”. In which he clearly stated what his intentions were.

But yes, other people are seeing it, and now you are too. Idk if that’s exactly a “congratulations” moment, but I’m glad you can see the parallels.

But have you read “Mein Kampf”? I did partially and I fully understand how he could write something down, publicise it and still surprise everyone.
But have you read “Project 2025”? Not the same, but there is parallels.

Only 85 fucking years…
I think many of those in power (politicians + ultra-wealthy) are trying to purposely mirror the Nazis; using similar rhetoric and actions. They view those tactics as successful to achieving their goals (trying to suck up all the world’s wealth and power).
No you’re in 1930s Germany. The Machtergreifung is still ongoing.

What’s happening here…

9/11 was the catalyst that broke America, no introspection about it being blowback* , just pants on head insane. The US slid down thay slippery slope and here we are

*See Chalmers Johnson’s book Blowback that came out long beofre 9/11 saying eventually there would be consequences for the US constantly interfering.

I have been told every day for the past year that I am overreacting by my family and some friends, and bit by bit watching those calls to calm down get more diminutive and less dismissive has been the only bittersweet kind of schadenfreude I’ve had all year, save for when Kirk got perforated.

I would’ve rather been wrong.

Something to consider: Hitler and Mussolini actually made life better for the average German and Italian citizen while they were brutally suppressing the out-groups they had decided to attack. Unless your net worth is in the tens of millions.m, Trump hasn’t done shit for you. That could help in the medium future.
Nope, we’re still in the thirties… for now.

Of course you will see similarities, we’ve been calling opponents “Nazis” for a long time, it’s an American tradition.

If you mean a country that will attack many other countries in wars of conquest? We have a long history of that, depending on what you consider to qualify as conquest.

If you mean like forces aligning for world war with USA as the belligerent aggressor, taking on any and all challengers? It sure is looking like this is possible. US government seems pretty hungry for resources and lot more than usual. Our greed is growing exponentially.

Just my opinion but I am not an expert.

You have always been those things.

Short answer, Americans (at least those with 28 grams of a brain) right now :

All of that has a master: The Office of the Papacy (the Pope).

This is Christofascism, unfortunately.
