Ran a game of #LiminalHorror tonight with friends who are new to the hobby. I chose the module „Echo in the Static“ by Andrew Dobell (link below) I found it to be an excellent module:
- Genre-wise, the module is a perfect execution of the found footage theme.
- Concise writing, easy to prep.
- The module takes localization serious, which is important for an #osr take on horror.
In sum: Highly recommended as a starting adventure for the Liminal Horror Game.

@HeyeBodo

This sounds really cool. Did your new-to-the-hobby friends enjoy it? Interesting that you started them with a horror game, although that would have been my first choice too :) I hope they want to come back for more!

@brian yeah - I think they did. One of the players said something like: „So cool - why did‘nt I know before, that these kind of games even exist.“ 🤩 I chose horror because I knew they players were into mystery themed Audio dramas and true crime podcasts. Was‘nt sure if they are into „behold ! An-elf-meets-goblin“ kind of stuff 😅

@HeyeBodo

That’s great they enjoyed it! I think a lot of the best recent TV and film drama tends towards that weird/inexplicable/mystery angle (maybe even using that great German word beloved of Freud - unheimlich!). It’s where my interests lie more than on the fantasy side, for sure (although I’m a firm believer in the idea that D&D in its original form is basically a horror game!)

@brian 💯 percent agree: low level old school dnd = survival horror. I dig the desperate/against all odds-heroism oozing from low Level dungeon exploration in gameplay. For me personally, so much more rewarding than playing modern dnd PCs all juiced up with super cool feats, hardly facing any stakes at all.

@HeyeBodo

That’s exactly how I feel about it! I’ve never been that interested in the levelling-up idea. I feel that having overly powerful PCs takes away the concept of threat, which for me is one of the essential components of these games - and which leads to more reliance on critical thinking and strategy. And as you know, survival horror entails that, sometimes, the PCs don’t survive…

@brian @HeyeBodo the levelling up thing is fine in its context — it’s modelling a certain type of literature — but if you start as superheroes then what’s the point?

@Colman @HeyeBodo

Exactly. That might also be the reason I’ve never been interested in superhero games, either. Of course, everyone’s different and it’s a very broad church - I just know what it is that I like about the games I like.

@HeyeBodo I should take a look at this!
