Electronic handbrakes on modern cars are shite. The analog, ratchet handbrakes on older cars were fine. An example of car boffins trying to fix problems that don't exist. See also electronic dashboards.
@anon_opin Also, the start stop systems on modern gas or diesel vehicles. Stupid.
@jdking92 @anon_opin I tend to love them on hybrids (meaning you have the ability to start moving instantly). What’s your beef with them?
@teotwaki @jdking92 @anon_opin in a manual, they start in the time you put the clutch down and put it in gear, which you were going to do anyway.
Do they stop on automatics if you don't put it in neutral or park?
@armb @teotwaki @anon_opin Pretty much. If you keep your foot on the brake when you’re in drive (assuming you’re driving an automatic), the engine doesn’t shut off. Otherwise, before you can move forward, you have to either press the start button or brake pedal, I think. Unfortunately, I can’t really give any more information than that as I don’t drive.
@jdking92 @armb @anon_opin That’s not universally true, and I’d argue mostly untrue. How many different brands of start and stop have you tried?
@teotwaki @armb @anon_opin Like I said, I don't drive. However, I've been in vehicles where the driver had to either press the engine start/stop button or depress the break pedal to get the engine fired up again when the vehicle was in drive and getting ready to set off after a stop. Also, I never clamed that the information I gave was universally true, and will never, ever clame to be an expert in this subject matter.
@jdking92 @armb @anon_opin There is no car where you need to press a button in order to start the engine in start and stop mode. Some cars have buttons to toggle start and stop mode.
@teotwaki @armb @anon_opin Fair enough. I’ve said all I’m willing to say on this score. I have no desire whatsoever to disgrace myself further by giving an accurate information. Thank you.
@armb @jdking92 @anon_opin Yes, in some cases there’s also a “stop mode” where the car won’t start advancing when you let go of the brake again until you press the accelerator. It’s effectively automatic park mode, very useful at red lights or whatever. Very annoying when manoeuvring (and then having an easy way to disable it is useful).
