TIL: that weird, liminal space between Christmas and New Year, when no one knows quite what day it is, or what they’re supposed to be doing?

In Norway 🇳🇴 there is a word for this time period: romjul, literally "space christmas"

Happy space christmas folks ...

Thank you @Natasha_Jay !

Currently enjoying my Space Christmas by arranging some music. 😁

@Natasha_Jay

Oh, "space christmas" is a good word. Romjul. In German, one says "zwischen den Jahren", "between the years".

@Natasha_Jay is the Netflix show home for Christmas somewhat accurate for what Christmas is in Norway?

(Assuming you’re from Norway but not quite sure you are! lol)

@Natasha_Jay my tribe just calls it CCC 😂
@Natasha_Jay Betwixtmas in our house
@2legged @Natasha_Jay this normally sums up the period for me but this year I gotta shake off the cheese fug and get to work
@Nikkileah @Natasha_Jay Commiserations. The cheese fug is every human"s birthright.
@2legged @Natasha_Jay oh, I've got 2 days off before New Year and a French cheeseboard with my name on it 😁

@Gergovie A person stands holding a microphone, wearing a dark blue jacket with a name tag reading "MUSK" and a circular emblem on the left chest, and an orange block-shaped cheese on their head. The background consists of horizontal pink and white stripes.

@deborahh @mayintoronto @Natasha_Jay Thanks, but I didnt create the drawing. I stole it off someone else on Mastodon.

They did a great job

Dec. 1st to 26th: festive

Dec 27th to 31st: confused, full of cheese, unsure of th4 day of the week.

@Natasha_Jay also, Merrineum 🙊

@Natasha_Jay in Scotland it’s called the daft days.
Around midwinter the dawn gets earlier, and the sunset gets later. But the two are out of sync. Dawn is three seconds later today than it was yesterday but it’s cancelled out by the sunset being 53 seconds later.
So the days are getting longer in spite of the sabotage of a later dawn.

Historically, nothing of any importance was done during the #daftdays

@Natasha_Jay I love this phrase. Thank you for sharing.
@Natasha_Jay can borrow from the Catholic tradition and make your Christmas twelve days!
@Natasha_Jay the cats have had two dinners tonight because in addition to not knowing what day it is apparently neither of us know what time it is either, so at least someone's benefiting from the confusion

@Natasha_Jay How do you know?

It could be "room christmas"

or "rum christmas"

I bet lotsa people would enjoy "rum christmas"

@Natasha_Jay We cannot tell a room, space, or rum apart.

It is sad.

We apparently need more words

@lettosprey @Natasha_Jay in defence of Norwegian, rum and room are in tone 1 and tone 2, so we have that going for us
@agathos If Norwegian (and English) could just start accepting accents, we could avoid a lot of this confusion on written text :O
@Natasha_Jay
@Natasha_Jay
English actually has a (probably not official) word for it too, Twixmas
@Natasha_Jay nice! In Swedish we call it Mellandagarna (the days in between). But I like space Christmas more
@Natasha_Jay in poland 'szczodre gody', traditional about 2 weeks from winter solstice
@Natasha_Jay I call it Cheesemas
@[email protected] friends call this time period Kwanzaa. A blessed Kwanzaa to you!
Does anyone know the Danish expression for it? TIA
@Natasha_Jay The Romjulan Neutral Zone?
Urban Dictionary: merrineum

The days between the butthole of xmas and the junk of new year. (Mer-uh-nee-uh-m) merry perineum

Urban Dictionary
@Natasha_Jay
And also to you! We should all post photos of our favorite moon or galaxy or something each day.
@Natasha_Jay also the days when you are uncertain when the bins go out .....

@Natasha_Jay in Swedish it's "mellandagarna" – the days in between.

The Cure made an entire album to celebrate this expression 😅

@Natasha_Jay

Happy Space Christmas!

@Natasha_Jay Cool, I have Space Christmas most days then! lol
