SHUTDOWN NOTICE: I'm planning on decommissioning the dataplatform.social server on March 31.

The server currently has less than 30 active users (with activity in the last month) and even though I've cost-optimized the operation, it still comes down to a relatively large amount of money per account.

Add to that the work of staying on top of patches, and it's just not worth the effort for me.

The good news is: there's a simple, straight-forward way to migrate your account to a new server:

1/3

To migrate your dataplatform.social account to another server, and bring along your followers and followed handles,

* Create a new account on another server
* On the new account, Preferences → Account → Moving from a different account → Create alias
* On the dataplatform.social account, Preferences → Account → Move to a different account → Add your new handle → Move followers
* Export your following list, Settings → Import&Export → Export
* Import the CSV on the new account

2/3

⚠️ The migration steps won't work after the dataplatform.social server is decommissioned, so make sure to do that before March 31st.

@dhmacher
I'm really bummed to read this. But I can't say I am surprised. I figured it was a lot of work for you--a burden of love, I suppose...and not a cheap one.

@dhmacher

Even more saddening is that #SQLFamily never embraced the Fediverse. I'm told after the bird site imploded, most opted for another capitalist, centralized network (bluesky).

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... ☹️

@dhmacher @DaveMasonDotMe Agreed on all of that. I was really hoping that everybody in #sqlfamily would congregate here instead of the other we-won’t-go-fascist-yet site. But thank you for giving us a place to congregate here in the interim. Now to find a new home, Federation-wise. We definitely appreciate you, and if I come across you want a SQLSat/DataSat/etc, I owe you a beer at the least!
