23: A drama that made you think

#kDrama, #kMovie(s) actually, naval battles during the Imjin War (1592-1598) in Joseon period. Yi Sun-sin film trilogy - The Admiral: Roaring Currents (2014), Hansan: Rising Dragon (2022), Noryang: Deadly Sea (2023). Brilliant strategies and resilience of Admiral Yi (one of history's greatest naval leaders), turtle warships (geobukseon) Yi built and designed, what if Japan succeeded instead of a stalemate after navy losses.

@Fanua I still have to finish this trilogy. Really enjoyed Roaring Currents but haven’t gotten to the rest yet. (Also I think you mean #Kdrama #Kmovie πŸ˜›)
@jcurries Oh yes, oops. πŸ™ƒ
@Fanua @jcurries
Since I got a Kocowa sub for the next 6 weeks, I'm going all historical, pretty much! There's a list of unwatched shows.
@EllenInEdmonton @jcurries Welcome to the unofficial #kDrama #saguek club! One historical will lead to another, and so on. πŸ™‚
@Fanua @jcurries
They do. But then I need a palate cleanser where the director hasn't instructed all supporting characters to just stare at the camera, frequently shouting a name again and again. Excellent stories, but the wigs and cinematography are generally uninspiring.

@EllenInEdmonton @jcurries And, there's that.

Over and over ...

@Fanua @jcurries
And debimama and mama for the queens. So many titles for so many people. It gets old, at least for me.
@EllenInEdmonton @Fanua @jcurries not the queens: the *dowager* queens πŸ€“
@bougiewonderland @Fanua @jcurries
Yes, they are the ones with the true power in the royal courts. I haven't found the hangul for the actual title.

@EllenInEdmonton @bougiewonderland @jcurries Is this it?

queen dowager

μ—¬μ™• 겸손

yeowang gyeomson

@Fanua @bougiewonderland @jcurries
No, that's not what folks call her. She's mama or debby mama, something along those lines.

@EllenInEdmonton @Fanua @bougiewonderland

λŒ€λΉ„λ§ˆλ§ˆ!

@jcurries @Fanua @bougiewonderland
Papago thinks that means something about preparation.

@EllenInEdmonton @jcurries @Fanua yeah but that’s because there aren’t any dowager queens anymore!

λΉ„ is the queen, λŒ€λΉ„ is the dowager queen (where λŒ€ means great/big/large). And I think if there is a grand dowager queen, if I’m not mistaken, it’s λŒ•μ™•λŒ€λΉ„ (with λŒ€μ™• means great king/ruler).

@bougiewonderland
Yes, I know λŒ€ for big, and the Chinese character is 倧. You see it doubled in businesses that are β€œjumbo” in English.
